Qi Cashmere

qiCashmere1.jpg Ahh the finer things in life. It’s what we’re all about at NOTCOT. And one of the finer things in the world of apparel is cashmere. But forget about boring V neck sweaters. Qi’s collection makes you rethink what a knitwear can be. I love the dress with gold braiding detail from their Holiday 2007 collection, shown above. More favorites after the jump!

O2’s Cocoon

o2main.jpg
Syntes Studio has done a gorgeous job designing O2’s latest phone… the Cocoon. It’s sense of subtlety of the glossy white exterior is gorgeous, and the blue LED scrolling displays are playfully simple… not to mention the way it opens to expose a dark center. Only thing more fun than checking out the beautiful O2 site and images, are the concept sketches and renderings featured on their website. Something about that pebble like sketch demonstrating how when cut open, exposes the unexpected interior, translated very nicely to the final piece. And as for technical details… well it plays music, takes 2mgp pix, etc… cutest detail? It scrolls Good Morning to you when its nested and in alarm clock mode!

Lelo Elise Review

elisemain.jpg
Latest gorgeous gadget to find its way to NOTCOT is the Lelo Elise. This is the latest pleasure object from the Swedish company, and they really do go all the way when it comes to scandinavian design details, gift worthy packaging, and technological performance… and in white, it looks like something you might find in the apple store. (The Elise also comes in a rich plum color.) Previously i showed you their Nea which was more pebble like, with the delicate floral illustrations… In the case of the Lelo Elise, “Sculptural simplicity and alluring tactile qualities define her essence. Well in tune with the natural curves of the female body, the stem forms a soft arc for easy access to all those special places.” Lots of unboxing and hands on imagery below ~

Generation Praktikum

yellshirtsmain.jpg
Mystery solved ~ here’s the update on Generation Praktikum from Alexander over at 2x4:

Currently at the Messe Frankfurt, Stylepark curated a show called “The Design Annual”. This year’s theme is “Private Identity”. We, 2x4, were asked to showcase our work in one of various “special booths” on the site. Instead, we opted to adapt the theme “Private Identity” and created a pop-up t-shirt store: the t-shirt as a sort of schizophrenic proclamation of identity, somewhere between brand and person. To lend the credibility to this concept, we created a series of 500 unique shirts that go into the store, offering 500 unique identities to the avid shopper. As soon as a shirt is bought, we take a picture of that person and file it back were the shirt used to be — the shop slowly evolves into a catalogue of 500 individuals.
“Generation Praktikum”, or “Generation Internship” is a fake “brand” that we invented for this purpose. It derives from a very famous German term, referring to the younger generation there, that, by loosing their job (prospects), also lost part of their identity.

You Tube Remixed

youtuberemix.jpg
You keep hearing about how all things Adobe are coming to the web… here’s an interesting combination to instant gratification video editing by way of YouTube and Adobe Premiere Express: YouTube REMIXER (beta). Nice clean simple drag and drop UI, with the usual silly “add graphics, borders, etc” features.

Allegro Palm Coast

loungers.jpg
Saw the Palm Coast Furniture line over at Trendir, and there’s something about the large blunt cushioned resin shapes that is strangely inviting, or seems ideal for curling up in right now after that Social Atelier Benefit last night and then working till 5am. Also the matching armrest even comes in a light up version which looks gorgeous by the outdoor pool.

Generation Praktikum

genprakmain.jpg
On mysterious emails (leading to images and next to no info) too good to resist… here’s the latest, apparently Generation Praktikum has a pop up exhibition over at the Frankfurt Fair “Design Annual” that is happening as i write this. All i know? It is brought to you by the brilliant NY based 2x4, and there are some very fun simple vacuum packed yellow tshirts and great portraits of people holding them behind this link. Will keep you posted as i find out more.

Social Atelier

socialatelmain.jpg
Social Atelier had an Ethical Night Out tonight in Culver City ~ in a combination that no place can pull off quite like LA. Darfur Benefit + Ridiculously Comfy Tees + Provocative Typography + Fred Segal Man Pop Up Store + Men with no tees, but still typography + Cupcakes and Brownies + Larger than life pictures of hungry kids + Models sporting the 39” 19” 33” tanks + Acai Liquor flowing freely + MySpace Impact crew + and your usual LA social scene. *phew* Can you imagine that? Well if not, you can still picture it after the jump. It fit all things NOTCOT ~ art/design + fashion + food/drinks.

Talk about synergy, kismet, serendipity,… or do you not believe in coincidences? I caught up with Social Atelier’s Andrei Najar for a few moments, and it sounds like he and Ya’el Afriat’s idea to try to create change, instigate awareness, and make some great tees were meant to be. And all from dropping off a look book at Fred Segal Man, which happened loved the line so much they decided to not only take it on, but showcase it in their windows as well as launch this event with all proceeds of the shirts sold tonight going to benefit Darfur?

Function

functionmain.jpg
I could use some magical functioning elixir right about now ~ just drove down to LA from SF a few days ago and have been running around non stop! Spotted these over at Josh Spear’s, and i must say i’m curious (although design wise, the packaging and branding of Vitamin Water still seem a bit nicer) ~ these Function Drinks are apparently the brain child of an orthopedic surgeon at UCLA, Dr. Alex Hughes. If these are the magical elixir they seem to claim, i think i might need cases of the Vacation alternating with Brainiac… and occasional doses of Youth Trip and Light Weight mixed in as well.

Fantastic Reality

lundmarkmain.jpg
Stockholm based Malin Lundmark’s ”As if fantasy was reality” collection was presented at her Salone Satellite 2007 booth ~ and apparently his fantasy world has some incredibly functional organizational pieces… from lamps and drawers that hold necklaces (while simultaneously showcasing them), to artistic frames that store and display your tools into a piece of art, adorably floral wall hooks and hangers that hold both clothing traditionally, and also belts, necklaces, etc. Discovered via Style Files.

Stacking

plasticlass.jpg
I want these. How can i ever look at other outdoor chairs again? When i could have plastic stacking Eames’ Lounge Chairs and Barcelona Chairs? Dirk Winkel’s “A Stacking Hommage” has mesmerized me all weekend, and continues to do so. This was his 2007 University of Arts Berlin final project.

Night Lab

nightlab.jpg
Introducing Night-Lab. The boyfriend site of Day-Lab (your go to place for gorgeous jewelry and other girly things). And it really is a boyfriend girlfriend team on these two sites… and Night-Lab claims to be for guys… although i found much i’m coveting… like this clock! This Perpetual Kid Half Time Clock, literally splits the time in two pieces… and doesn’t give up the critical parts of being a great clock: the cuckoo and the pendulum! I think i only really need that half. I’m also impressed its only 30$ here (45$ over at perpetual kid). And it’s cast in frosty porcelain. And it has gorgeous packaging ready for gifting. I’m also liking their funky tie selection (see some of my favs below)… and the fact that they have a graphics novel and comics section. (Girls like these things too!)

Side note: nice clean UI going on… i’m a new found fan of Ryan Baudoin’s work… see more over at his gorgeous portfolio site BoyCraft.

The Alembic

alembicmain.jpg
The Alembic ~ sister bar to the Magnolia Pub and Brewery down the street on Haight. Haight Street Fair (30th anniversary!) was yesterday, and everyone was out in full force indulging their many vices. At The Alembic i found Good Friends & Great Enemies - and got really sucked in with its incredible branding/graphic design and great ambiance and interiors… oh and also its vast amount of scotches and fine liquors and brilliantly insightful bartenders… OH and i can’t forget the delicious gourmet treats (you MUST try the Grilled Asparagus with Hazelnut Honey Vinaigrette and the Herb Gnocchi with Serrano Ham, Arrugula Pesto, and Saffron. Mmmm.)

BUT, back to why i’m sharing this with you ~ the design. I sat there fawning over the menus, and bar details, as i sipped my drinks… and now that i’m back, checking out the pictures, and their great website as well, the work that Williamsburg based Nothing Something did on their identity and environment i’m completely taken by. So, more images below, of their design, and ambiance, and even another quick 5 second video of the bar scene.

Venture Design Works

venturedesign.jpg
Venture Design Works - brilliant products, and great design story behind them. There’s no design story that grabs me quite like ones where products are being designed as a result of the passion (with a dash of brilliant design skills) versus the motivation of just getting a job done. Venture Design Works has a line of outdoor goods: “vDw also designs and markets innovative products for the many gear intensive activities the founders like to partake in such as cycling, running, skiing, climbing, kiteboarding, triathlon and backpacking.”

The results? The Press-Bot that turns your nalgene into a french press (the way you install and remove this easily is genius). The Gel-Bot that lets you one handedly drink both gels and liquids from the same bottle. Freehand lets you stash your cash, mp3, phone, etc and still have both hands to use. Soft Flask - think toothpaste tube for your liquids and gels making it easy to squeeze every last drop out.
