The Ultimate Grill (Part 3) - NOTConcept 001

grillcloseup.jpgNOTConcept 001: The Ultimate Grill - [Research] [1: Idea Sketching] [2: Concept Dev] [3: 3D Renders]

Can you believe we’re already at the final installment of the first NOTConcept, a NOTCOT and HERO Design Lab collaboration? So, you’ve seen the research, the sketching/brainstorming, the concept development, and here is our final piece of NOTConcept 001 - the Ultimate Grill! Here are the 3D renders of the product, and some photomontages of the product in context. Lots to see after the jump ~ in particular, i love the details of how you can swap in different logos/symbols/anything really in the grill plate itself to mark the food differently (whether that is NOTCOT, or “medium rare” and “well done”, or a little veggies only symbol)… also its versatile enough to be hanging, or with a floor stand… anyhow see below and the details are outlined!

Sheffield Winter Gardens

sheffield1.jpgNOTCOT Note: Here’s another post from Justine (rugenius) ~ and her adventures in the UK!

Like Fru and Gu, Sheffield’s Winter Gardens are something I’d come across earlier in my tenure over here in England, but never had the chance to really explore. I came across them when staying at the Mercure hotel in Sheffield, which is itself indulgently modern. I admired them from the hotel, whose Champagne bar and restaurant flank the gardens, but never actually spent time in the space. On my recent return, the gardens themselves are more than noteworthy.

The Winter Garden is a temperate haven. With its high, sweeping wooden arches and use of natural light, it transforms what is an often gray and dreary South Yorkshire day into a world bathed in soft light. Unlike the heat and humidity we often associated with greenhouses, the interior is cool and dry (and I must admit, reminds me of home!). And the high ceilings provide excellent acoustics, creating a reverential atmosphere and sense of calm (thats right, no reverberating screams of children!). See many beautiful pictures of the interior of this incredible space after the jump!

Noferin Pecanpals

noferin0.jpgCandy and Nicho, are the Aussie duo that make up Noferin. Exciting news i recently received from them - they are coming out to Santa Monica (from Carrara Island, Australia!) for their solo exhibition at Copro Nason on April 5th! I’ve been begging them for a sneak peek at what is to come… and studio pics and perhaps some paintings in progress coming soon… so far i’ve got a sneak peek at the Pecanpals (which you may remember from .org #7556) - made up of Fanelli, Pecan, Pandacake, Claudius and Jac Jac (read their bios on the Noferin site). These little guys are entirely made from wood, hand crafted, hand painted, and limited to 200 per character! The final versions may vary slightly from these prototypes, but i hope not by much, since they are pretty perfect looking as they are! See closeups of the whole set after the jump! I love all the little sidekicks… the grass cuttings, elephant, and dumbells are definitely my favorites.

Fru and Gu Review!

frugumain.jpgNOTCOT Note: I sent Justine (aka Rugenius) on a mission since she’s living in the UK, to go buy some of these delicious Fru Puds and Gu Puds and take some pics and let me live vicariously through her… Here’s what she’s reported back, with pics!

Fru Puds and Gu Puds certainly know how to do packaging. It’s hard not to pick them up at the market. In fact, I picked some within my first few weeks in the UK! It’s hard to deny the sensuous chocolatey goodness advertised on that packaging….and I’m alway a sucker for a nice black matte. I think we started with chocolate mousse, the traditional. So when the order came in from NOTCOT to check out some more of their range, I was all too happy to oblige. I thought we should go for something a bit different though. So we went for the Gu chocolate pots and the Fru carrot cake bites. See all my pics of packaging, unboxing, and indulging below!

The Nomad Yurt by EcoShack

theyurtmain.jpgThe Nomad Yurt by EcoShack. I try to settle down, i try to find a “home” and stay put, but i seldom last more than a year. I’m a socal girl who’s home is in her car, on the road, or bouncing between hotel rooms and friends’ places around the world… I suppose i’m a modern day digital nomad. A digi-nomad that needs a yurt!

The one object i walked away from CA Boom V lusting after and itching to drop $8000 on is the Nomad Yurt… it breaks down and pops up in under a half hour (depending how many friends you have), and gives you an instant 120 square feet of calm, shady, cozy privacy, with a nice woody platform (don’t worry about what the ground is like around you like most yurts), a light sturdy bamboo structure, and weatherMAX covering. Whether you use it as an instant studio, a guest room, a spa treatment room, or the best backyard under-tree-house ever… its a fun way to get some extra space, that you can pack up into the back of the car. Take a look at the images of this eco-friendly, permit-free, portable structure as it was at CA Boom, the view from within, and diagrams and images of how you put it together after the jump.

So, what do you think? Instead of investing in “real” offices, wouldn’t it be fun to have a group (commune?) of these instant-office/studio yurts out in Topanga?

Jesse Kamm Designs at A+R

jesseKamm1.jpg

I wandered over to the A+R store in Silverlake to check out the Gen Art New Garde pop-up store, and the clothing by Los Angeles-based designer Jesse Kamm immediately caught my eye. When I was informed that she prints the designs on the fabric by hand herself I was even more impressed. The prints are so adorable and they don’t look “crafty” (if you know what I mean..) in the least. My favorite piece is definitely the dress with bow graphic and apparently it’s her most popular design at the moment.

Royal VKB’s Kids Puzzle Dinner Tray

royalpuzzle1.jpgA+R is the closest thing out there to a NOTCOT store… and the novelty has yet to wear off, since Andy keeps the place stocked with far too much that makes me feel like a kid in a designer candy store. Aside from the Theosauruses that i showed you earlier… i fell for this Puzzle Dinner Tray from Royal VKB designed by Wendy Boudewijns. In a nice unbreakable melamine, this tray helps kids get used to what goes where… and having loved puzzles of all sorts growing up, i just know my mom would have gotten me one of these had it been around when i was a wee one. Although i’m sure i’ve seen this around the web, playing with it in person won me over to post about it… see some hands on pics below!

San Zhi

0315sanzhi1.jpgNOTCOT Note: Here’s another article from Anna Corpron of Sub-Studio!

I came across a flickr set today with some amazing pictures of an abandoned housing complex called San Zhi outside of Taipei, Taiwan. A google search didn’t bring up much information, but from what I can gather, it was apparently built in the early 1980s as a series of vacation homes marketed towards affluent Taipei residents seeking to get out of the city.

The speculation about why the site was abandoned varies, with the most interesting being that a series of fatal accidents occurred during construction, causing locals to believe the site was haunted, and therefore instigating the developer’s decision to stop construction (and also putting a stop to any future redevelopment). A more mundane reason listed for the abandonment was the developer running out of money, but I’ll go with the first reason, thank you!

Architecturally speaking the houses are super cool, being very futuristic for the 80’s (even by today’s standards) with the cantilevered, modular pods houses (think Archigram). Check out more amazing photos from two flickr sets after the jump!

LOVA at REVOLVE Clothing pop-up store

lovaBW.jpg

Last Wednesday night we checked out the new men’s clothing line LOVA (pronounced like Lo-vah, not Luvah) at REVOLVE Clothing’s pop-up store on Melrose in LA which is open March 13-16 and will re-open in August(?) for real as their flagship store.

I feel like there’s sort of an empty spot in the fashion landscape for guys who want to dress well but still want to look young and not like their dads. I’m excited by the continuing menswear trend that seems to be tackling this problem by creating a look that’s modern but timeless at the same time. LOVA is the latest contender in this trend and was definitely impressed by the quality of their stuff. Giuseppe Valentini, co-founder and designer of the line, says “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication” and I couldn’t agree more, so it’s no wonder that I love their look because it’s the simplicity that gives it that timeless quality.

Theosaurus - Piggy Bank

theosaurus.jpgThe German Theosaurus - the porcelain piggy bank with nostrils so large you’re sure it ought to be able to sniff out some truffles for you… or, at least, help you save up some coin to buy some! After CA Boom V (which took merely an hour to cover) ~ i headed over to Abbot Kinney and stopped in on Andy over at A+R, where he had just gotten the Theosauruses in, and he even has an exclusive on them this month! These adorable piggy banks showed up on .org as #7013, but seeing them in person, you can’t help but want to pick it up and bring it home… really, it’s one worth checking out in person, and would make a darling gift for nearly anyone, once you figure out which one to buy. We debated whether the sitting or standing was more cute… and personally, i think the sitting one is most adorable when next to the standing one, however if i only got to go home with one, definitely the standing one… in porcelain with the blue pattern! Although, the sitting one does have a locking bottom, versus the two cork feet of the standing one… and the family of the 4 did look most adorable together. Anyhow, take a look below to see how they look in context of the real world (versus the uber-clean product photography world).

Magis and Javier Mariscal

alma_e_linus.jpgYou can’t go wrong with Magis, the products both large and small have had me lusting since i was a kid… and tonight in particular i’ve been rediscovering their Me Too children’s collection (many of which have been on NOTCOT over the years)… one that i hadn’t noticed before is this Alma and Linus stacking chair and table set from Spanish designer, Javier Mariscal. The most incredible part is seeing the patterns on the back up close, i love the trees filled with the birds in their leaves! Made of injection molded Polypropylene with glass fibre, this set is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Below, see not only a close up of the detail of the back of these seats, but also a few other Mariscal pieces for the Magis Me Too Collection (like the crazy angler fish looking play thing!)

Magis’ Puppy by Eero Aarnio

magispup1.jpgThe Puppy now comes in a sky blue! This was the first thing to grab me at CA Boom V at Santa Monica Airport’s Barker Hangar today… the Magis Me Too Collection’s booth is filled with all four sizes of the puppy in the four colors - green, white, orange, and now blue! This piece by Eero Aarnio is quite the iconic and irresistible kids piece that i would love to have around… see more pics below!

p.s. can you believe i first wrote about this puppy 3 years ago? (and for those who need a refresher, Aarnio is the man behind design icons like the ball chair and the bubble chair!)
