Designer Airsickness

airsicknessbag.jpg
Poor RUGenius has been quite ill as of late ~ so this one’s for her. Even when you are puking your guts out in cars, planes, and trains ~ you can apparently do it in style with these designer air sickness bags. By the Redstr Collective, “These limited edition, hand-screened barf bags were designed through the AAA. The bags have been released in limited editions for The Future Perfect, Terminal 5, and Le Bon Marche. They are meant to serve as a vehicle for the everyday consumer to display their distaste for BAD DESIGN.” Noticed this in the Core77 Newsletter.

Air Necklace

blingballoon.jpg
Air Necklace from Kyouei Designs ~ the guys who brought us the much talked about balloon lamp and honeycomb lamp. The air necklace really is just a nicely shaped extravagant mylar balloon ~ not sure how nice those edges would feel, and too bad they dont have a picture of someone wearing it~ but fun idea.

Type Talk Fonts

sugarandspiceft.jpg
TypeTalk - handwriting fonts with something to say. MFA Thesis project of Amy Papaelias, this is a fun, well executed project that gives fonts some context - both in handwriting style and the way it translates what you’re really saying…. examples above are the Sugar and Spice and the Francophile. Sugar and Spice “replicates the expected speech of a nine year old girl. Socially acceptable roles dictate linguistic choices of emotional expression.” Francophile on the otherhand “asserts the French salutations and phrases to decorate an otherwise English vocabulary.” It is even the actual handwriting of a French woman. I love that Papaelias sees typography as “Visual Pronunciation”.

St. Mary’s ER in SF

stmaryserad.jpg
One of the best parts of being in SF this week, are these ads. They make me smile every time… they are all over the buses, bus stops, billboards, lamp posts, etc. And oh so true… my favorite kind of design, clean simple with bold font and graphics ~ Work of Mortar for St. Mary’s Medical Center ER. More at the Mortar Blog.

Pixel Press Icons

iconicstuff.jpg
I haven’t seen an icon set that got me giddy in a while (went through a massive icon design obsession phase a few years back, and used to scour the net regularly for them when bored) ~ but these from Pixel Press Icons got me back into it again this morning. via Contranorm on .org.

Ray of RADAR

radarschmain.jpg
Every now and then a car comes along that makes you swoon a little. Last week that was Ray. I’m sure you’ve noticed me gushing about Radar recently as i get more hooked on taking more rather random cameraphone pics recently ~ but being visually driven like i am… i think they have some great branding… from their tshirts and stickers, to flyers and glasses! (yes, you heard me right, schwag shots below.) But most impressive really is this revamped 1965 Ford Econoline that they’ve named Ray, “he is not just a van, he’s a member of our team” as the Radar Street Team Coordinator, he really is that extra something to grab peoples attention, or just bring a smile to everyone that sees him. Glossy chocolate brown on the outside, white and furry on the inside, and baby blue highlights all around - It’s unique, playful, and from a design perspective, i cant get over how sweet the design of those lights and knobs and dials are. Classic and Iconic. More on the branding of Radar below…

Leibovitz takes on Disney

disneylebmain.jpg
Breathtaking new ad campaign for Disney’s Year of a Million Dreams’, featuring photography by genius Annie Leibovitz, and Scarlett Johansson, Beyoncé, David Beckham, Lyle Lovett, and Oliver Platt. My favorite tagline “Where imagination saves the day.” These photographs reignite my love of fairy tales, myths, fables ~ and are a great example of how universal these ideals are… who doesn’t smile at the sight of them?

“Befitting a true princess, Johansson wears a stunning, one-of-a-kind Harry Winston tiara – a dazzling piece in platinum with more than 62 carats of sparkling diamonds and valued at $325,000. The dress worn by Johansson is a custom-made, Cinderella-inspired gown designed by Nicoletta Santoro.” WOW. And when can you find these in print? “The campaign premieres as a special insert in the March issues of Vanity Fair, GQ, Vogue, W, The New Yorker, Conde Nast Traveler and Cookie.”

Full images and a few behind the scenes shots below… and would you believe i first heard about this via Wii News Channel?

CARE - Stella McCartney

carestella.jpg
CARE by Stella McCartney is a new line of skincare ~ that is Ecocert-certified. CARE is “a unique luxury line of certified organic skincare, formulated with 100 percent organic active ingredients and zero percent petrochemicals or silicones.” While she isn’t necessarily the first eco/organic line out there (my old time favs is still Neal’s Yard Remedies) - it is really interesting to see this transition of luxury and eco merging… also, i am a big fan of her logo, and sleek design/packaging. There is even a discovery kit of travel sized testers to give the new line a try.

Bossa Nova

bossanova.jpg
For fellow acai fans, and just because this was some fun packaging/bottle design and branding ~ just noticed Bossa Nova. And for anyone unfamiliar with acai - “What is açai? Açai (ah-sci-ee) is a rainforest berry - a small, dark purple fruit that grows on palm trees on the floodplains of the Amazon basin. Recent scientific study has earned Bossa Nova Acai Juice it the enviable title of “world’s healthiest fruit” in part, because it is likely to be the world’s highest antioxidant fruit.”

Hayon for Piper-Heidsieck

piperhayon.jpg
Piper-Heidsieck Champagne has teamed up with Jaime Hayon (yes, of the Showtime and AQ collections) ~ and have collaborated on a signature red champagne bucket and champagne bowl. Beautifully iconic (as all of his work is) ~ this collection will be debuting exclusively at two locations in New York City, one in Miami Beach and one in Chicago through April 2007 (full listing below). ” These items are made entirely out of Surlyn, a material commonly used in molded luxury goods, and continue in the tradition of Champagne Piper-Heidsieck’s striking red color.”

Peer Pressure

peerpressuremain.jpg
PEER PRESSURE! The latest from Alice Wang (of Audio Sticks and Pet Plus) - this time she takes on the issue of peer pressure and how it relates to the public and private aspects of your persona. Oh come on, on SOME level you kind of sort of care what people think about you.

So here is Peer Pressure, which is currently on display at RCA ~ including double sided headphones (for when you want to listen to embarrassing music on the inside, but project ANYTHING else outward), popular mobile (because constantly getting sms’ means you’re popular), fast typing keyboards… and more. Details and closeups below. (And you know i also love this project for its stark black and white look.)

Pret DIY

eatwithyourhead.jpg
Can it be? Massive chain Pret a Manger ~ is giving away all their secrets AND incorporating some brilliant and witty food photography as well? Apparently so! “We want to share the magic of Pret food with our loyal customers, so we’ve done a very odd thing and decided to reveal our secrets by telling you our recipes! Find a selection of them here, and also on our packaging, bags and postcards. A photographer called Jorgen Ahlstrom took the weird DIY photos.” Another collage of my favorites from the DIY recipe cards below… b/c well, WHY did they have to make me sit and click through EVERY pdf to see all the pics?

Manuella’s Elephant

manuella.jpg
Manuella’s elephants and bunnies (also ducks and dogs exist)…. brain child of Merav Flam, graduate of Bezalel Academy for Art and Design Jerusalem… and i’m smitten not only by these creatures, but also by the motivation behind the line… “With children in mind, her unique designs reflect her own longing for childhood without digital and electronic toys… ‘Manuella’ - is reminiscent of the mechanical system that was used a long time ago to operate dolls, musical boxes, and toys.” Now if that doesn’t hit you somewhere in your laptop toting, cell phone attached, wii loving being… i give up, go buy your kid an Ugly Doll.

But i have this habit of always shopping for kids toys (some of which admittedly i end up buying myself) ~ and having a few products in mind for all of those last minute baby showers that keep popping up, and to find the perfect gift is hard, but it will be hard to go wrong showing up with one of these Manuella Elephants.
