Arta Brio Bar Tools and Shaker

arta0.jpg Excited to get a first look at Arta’s gorgeous and playful set of bar tools that magically nest (tools into rack into ice bucket that sits on the cutting board) as well as a shaker with a built in jigger/strainer. Beautifully unique designs, and really fun packaging, first reaction was definitely - awesome house warming gift idea! (The tools in ice bucket particularly!) I love the packaging! Those silhouettes really grab you! Its such a fun portable set of - muddler, tongs, stirring spoon, bottle opener, knife, citrus reamer, citrus zester, drip-free ice bucket, and integrated cutting board. And since i played with it before lunch today, we actually used it while playing around with some lemons from the tree out back and made some lemonade. While the shaker is fun, and the integrated jigger and strainer are an unusual design, it is a bit impractical… its hard to get the top off, and unless you’re pouring it when pretty level, using that for measurement while chatting with friends gets tricky! I think it’s complicated instead of simplifying the drink making process? But the tool set is a fun one to have around the house, especially for a quick set you can bring outside with you for cocktails while bbq-ing! Take a peek at the details on the next page!

A Social Media Conversation: London Hotels

londonhotelsmain.jpg Social Media as your new *living* search engine? You read all the rumors, you hear all the rants on how irrelevant + trivial these fleeting status updates are… And honestly, i’m still learning how/why to use these services MY way…

I’ve found that twitter and facebook have been my new go-to after obsessive internet searches when doing research… and these have spurred some incredible conversations and quick sources of great information! BUT, it’s always so 1-to-many (versus 1-1 or many-to-many) and hosted in a way where all participants can’t see the results. (i.e. i tweet a question and followers/repliers can’t see all the other responses ~ and on facebook i have a status question and only those following it can see the evolving conversation)

End result? A post so i dont lose this fun conversation, and the valuable information that came up with it… So, if you’re looking for where to stay in London during Design Week 09? (Sept 19-27) ~ well i was looking into Soho and/or Shoreditch, and here’s what i’ve learned (on the next page!)

Warehouse 13: Steampunk Keyboard + Tablet

warehouse131.jpg Ok, i LOVE the design details in science fiction. This morning i was so half awake, i started things off catching up on the new Syfy show Warehouse 13 to ease into things… and couldn’t help but fixate on the STEAMPUNK WACOM TABLET! I mean i love all the bizarre archaic gadgetry (Wired has a nice look at them)… but its the tablet and keyboard that got me first. Also… i love how small the internet is, while looking up past steampunk keyboard, found out that the keyboard was made by Datamancer - “prestidigital datamancery & paraphrenalic technofetishism” ~ and the exact keyboard in the show is “the Sojourner keyboard I built for my girlfriend 2 Christmases ago” - and he “hope[s] the show becomes very popular so they commission me to build them some more elaborate contraptions for future seasons (I’m actually designing a Version 2.0 of my old Computational Engine PC right now with them in mind)”… So fun to hear how these shows pull in awesome design for even the tiniest details… see more pics on the next page!

p.s.
it was driving me a little nuts when they made it look like the wacom was a giant touch sensitive tablet though…

Ben & Jerry’s Flipped Out

flipped0.jpg On really fun packages to receive ~ Ben & Jerry’s sent over some of their new Flipped Out ice creams. Basically they are like ice cream upside down “cakes” ~ you peel the top, flip it over, and stick your thumb in to push them out onto your plate, and within moments they get a little gooey and fudgey… honestly its more fun/yummy than it is pretty. There is brownie, peanut butter cup, and cookie dough ~ peanut butter and cookie dough were def the best! Strangely of our panel of 3 ~ brownie was not living up to expectations!

BUT, for the SUPER fun part, it came packed in a big styrofoam container with DRY ICE! So as we unboxed, ended up playing with the dry ice for a bit until it was all gone! So some silly videos of that were inevitable… check out a look at the unboxing, dry ice playing, packaging, and more on the next page!

MTV the logos + backgrounds

mtvall.jpg Strange things happen when you’re up at 6am and too awake to sleep but to asleep to function. Things like watching unplugged videos on MTV and getting distracted by the awesome backgrounds and obsessively refreshing the page in a new window (so your videos can still play) to see all the different random backgrounds that appear… and then refreshing until so many repeat that you can safely guess that you’ve seen them all. My favorite part of MTV as a kid was definitely the interstitials with awesome animations of their logo ~ well their website does it too ~ so check out a few of my favorite backgrounds from their site on the next page! SO fun!

50 Parties - No Strangers. Ryan McGinness Style.

50parties.jpg Ryan McGinness Studios is throwing 50 Parties. 50 Themes. 50 Weeks. In a row. In the studio. No sponsors. No strangers. My favorite part? NO STRANGERS! Unfortunately i’m pretty sure i’m a stranger. BUT those magical invite cards are “valid for card holder +1”. Do you have one? Can i be your +1 someday?

All in all its such a lovely concept, and so similar to salon/intellectuallly playful get togethers i’ve been tossing around with friends… yes, i know. McGinness DID IT. I have not. But someday i hope to organize, or find help to organize enough to do some too! Here’s how he explains it, “In New York City, there has never been a shortage of parties. Parties celebrating a new product or publication or development have been rampant. Those celebrating or nurturing a meaningful social exchange, on the other hand, have been noticeably absent.” So far Party 00 was the Practice Party, and coming up is the Whit Trash BBQ. Yes, you read that right. The 50 Parties project has its own blog, Twitter, and YouTube feed. Not that any of those should surprise you at all. See more pics of the goodness on the next page…

p.s.
i’ve been a huge McGinness fan long before i started NOTCOT… so jealous to hear about friends who have been getting invites already!

Drink Up Rock Out - MWM Rock Band Guitar

rockband1.jpg Just got home and ended up playing way too much Rock Band tonight ~ so as tired as my body might be, my mind was inspired to show you this awesome limited edition MWM Graphics Rock Band Guitar that i’ve been meaning to post! Before we get into looking at how sweet this guitar is… lets get all the complicated collaborations and brands out of the way ~ this Geometric Funk XBOX 360 Rock Band Guitar was created by MWM Graphics, which is Matt W. Moore, for Pepsi Rock Band 2009 to promote the Pepsi/Yahoo/Harmonix/MTV Drink Up, Rock Out promotion! Basically, gamers can submit their own Rock Band music videos for a chance to win a MTV Video Music Award Moonman, as well as other great Rock Band prizes under the caps of Pepsi bottles everywhere! I just got distracted midway through post writing while watching a bunch of the videos, some are pretty hilarious - here, check this one out.

ANYHOW, beyond the pretty fun campaign going on (i think you have till Sept to rock out and make a fun music video!) ~ stepping back and checking it out ~ i just love that this is art + video games + music + UGC + ad campaign. It’s so fun to see the graphic stylings of favorites like MWM Graphics on a Rock Band fender guitar! I must say the number of brands you can tie into this whole endeavor is hurting my head slightly ~ but that aside ~ could the rock band guitar be the new tshirt/skateboard to customize for artists? Check out more pics of this gorgeous collaboration on the next page ~ as well as some screenshots of the campaign (i’m liking the site design!).

Beasties Lamp from Habitat

beasties1.jpg On awesome 4th of July presents from afar ~ my sister just bought me and then installed to photograph ~ this awesome Beasties Lamp Shade from Habitat! (It’s waiting for me out in London, so the unbox will hold me over till i get there on my next trip!) If it looks familiar, i posted it as #22491… These Beasties are “Acid etched metal shade featuring animal-shaped silhouettes etched around the shade.” Take a peek at more shots of it, the cool shadows it makes, and the packaging on the next page!

Fireworks - Happy 4th of July

fireworks0.jpg Happy 4th of July! While out at the Yuki 7 opening at Gallery Nucleus tonight ~ since i seldom venture out to Alhambra ~ we cruised around a bit, and there were 4+ of these fireworks trailers within a few block radius! So, naturally, it was hard to resist stopping at one to check out the frenzy, and couldn’t resist indulging and picked up The Nite Thriller. The packaging is quite amusing… so many crazy fonts… the plastic bag has THE PREVENTOR on it… some even have the special “Glofuze”… and with names like Crackling Cactus and Golden Shower, it’s hard not to giggle.

p.s.
They were for a good cause! Apparently TNT Fireworks are great for fundraising, and the ones we saw were for the AYSO teams.

Design in Caprica

caprica.jpg I keep hearing about SciFi/Syfy’s Caprica recently ~ so got curious and checked out the DVD on directv tonight ~ and i love the designy details of this alternate reality. Particularly the tennis court!!! And the architecture of the main house, the bookshelves, and the computer sheets… take a peek at some screenshots on the next page!

p.s.
i must admit i haven’t really watched battlestar yet, but it has come up so many times in the last week alone, definitely need to do some catching up?

Floor of Pennies - The Standard Grill

pennies.jpg A floor literally tiled with thousands of copper pennies… it’s pretty surprising to look down and see them when you walk into The Standard Grill in the Standard Hotel New York, below the Highline. The design was selected by the restaurant’s designers,
Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch of New York-based design firm Roman
and Williams. See some more peeks of it on the next page!

Michael Jackson Spiral

mj.jpg Snapped this pic just as i was walking out of CAboom ~ not sure who the artist is (ideas?) ~ but upon looking at it closer when i got home, its a pretty freaky Michael Jackson facial evolutionary spiral… see it up close on the next page.

Update: Turns out it is “Epic Thriller” by Kelly Coats
