Fourth is King! Happy NOTCOT Holiday Giveaway #10! Why the name? Well the founder is James William Byrnes IV and you know the old school rhyme - “First is the worst, Second is the best, Third is the one with the treasure chest. Fourth is king, Fifth is queen, Sixth is the one with the washing machine.” Not quite how i heard it as a kid, i think third had the hairy hairy chest… but it sure makes more sense of the name and playfulness of Fourth is King’s lifestyle collection - with fun stickers and keychains and t-shirt designs, including a gorgeous wood print collaboration with Bryan Nash! They have quite the bundle in store for a lucky winner…
THE GOODS: A bundle of a sticker pack, Cedar Pole by Bryan Nash Gill White t-shirt, Amigo floating keychain in red, Lightning Strikes Twice Ash t-shirt, Peace Out t-shirt and One of a Kind Light Gray t-shirt.

Today I made my way to Holborn for the Cockpit Arts Christmas Open Studios. The open studios were my first introduction to Cockpit Arts, a creative-business incubator for designer-makers that supports craftspeople. The event lasts throughout the weekend at their Holborn site, Cockpit Yard and continues next weekend South of the river in Deptford (more details here). A great place to pick up beautiful, unique, last-minute Christmas gifts.
It was a bustling environment, filled with studios turned into shops, packed with goodies and the droolworthy scent of mulled wine, mince pies and other seasonal delights. As for the goods on offer, all sorts of crafted wonders, from jewellery to ceramics, knitwear to illustrations. Among our favorites were the always lovely Thornback & Peel and the beautiful works of Abigail Brown, whose work we also loved in Ghosts of Gone Birds last year. More photos on the next page!
This year we’re doing gift guides as we feel inspired to round up products we either have or would be extremely tempted to buy or gift. Black Friday/Cyber Monday shopping online this year ended up being all about the NOTpuppy, Bucky, and i’ve been learning a ton as we shop through the world and internet to catch up on what awesome dog goodies are out there. While the roundup of rugged toys/brands have been growing here, this Dog Gift Guide is all about fun products we’re loving and wanting for Bucky! And while he is only a 10 week old Lab pup, he’s already getting pretty strong - so for this gift guide, we’re really shopping for the rugged, fun, BIG dog toys that will last… not so much cutesiness, clothes, or things that accessorize your dog like they are an accessory. Ready to dive in to the goodness? Head to the next page!
CW&T created their Pen Type-A out of love for the Hi-Tec-C pens when they wanted a more deserving casing for the great cartridges… they designed their dream pen, an incredible stainless steel pen that fits the cartridge perfectly, and slips into a multipurpose ruler/sleeve with incredible piston like precision (creating the most incredible pop as you pull it out)… and with the overwhelming support from Kickstarters, their dream became a reality (and beyond! They asked for $2,500 and ended up with $281,989)! This also a lesson in larger scale manufacturing… in china… and the crazy business nightmare that we can all learn from… and now they are manufacturing in multigenerational family run shop in Vermont with some awesome people, and back on track to share the pen they love! So for NOTCOT Holiday Giveaway #8, we’re thrilled to give away 3 Pen Type-As to 3 winners!
THE GOODS: 3 of CW&T’s Pen Type-As to 3 winners.
TO WIN: Leave a comment here sharing what item you treasure that you imagine handing down to the next generation by 12/5 PST for a chance to win. Winner will be contacted via email.

From kickstarter to my mail box! My Seed Money by Leafcutter Designs just showed up today, and they are even cuter than expected. Lovely attention to detail with the packaging and coin faces. Basically, they had custom pressed paper filled with seeds, then letterpressed and cut out as coins! So you can tip with them, share them with friends, pop them in pots and poof! Plants!
As they describe it, “Seed Money looks like the real thing - pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters - but is far more valuable. Use it to solicit surprise and smiles from friends and strangers alike, and then tuck these paper coins in soil to grow colorful flowers and delicious vegetables. It’s tender for tending! Seed Money is hand-illustrated and letterpress printed in Nebraska on thick custom papers embedded with seeds. Available in rolls for sharing and spreading the wealth, these lightweight, whimsical - and practical - coins will slide easily into a purse or pocket.”
As for what grows from them - Pennies: Mix of wildflowers including Black-Eyed Susan, Spurred Snapdragon, Shirley Poppy, White Tarrow, and Sweet Alyssum. Nickels: Herbs including oregano, dill, parsley, basil, chive, thyme, and sage Dimes: Root crops including carrot, parsnip, and turnip. Quarters: Salad greens including bibb, Black Simpson, Salad Bowl Red, radicchio, and endive. And the special Buffalo Nickels: Bee Balm (aka Lemon Mint).

We’ve been following and loving the paper craft characters of Shin Tanaka for some time now… So, while at the LA Auto Show, i was delighted to find scattered around the Scion booth were Shin Tanaka DIY Collabos with Scion… fun Paper Shapers of Scion FR-S, iQ, xB, xC, and xD complete with little speaker sneakers, arms, and more. Too adorable to pass up - i just sat and made them all to share with you! Supposedly there is an app available where you can customize, print, and build your own - but i can’t find it in any app store yet (let me know if you have more luck?) See details as well as an animated teaser video on the next page!
Areaware keeps life fun and beautiful. Their designs are always simply delightful, and perfect to pass on… The surreal nature of Flat Life Light designed by Finn Magee is a great example of that - it looks like a hanging painting, but with printed PET and electronics, this light is perfect for bedside! Yes, you can really turn it on! For NOTCOT Holiday Giveaway #7, you can win not only this stunning new light, but also their adorable smaller wooden bear - Ursa Minor by David Weeks, crafted out of sustainably harvested new growth beech wood, as well as Karl Zahn’s Tree Tops in green!

Mercedes-Benz Ener-G Force Concept Car - it’s like the cartoon super hero car that someone between the Fisher Price Rescue Heroes/Team Fortress/Duke Nukem would drive… with an Xterra-esque rear, an FJ like feel, and the illustrations remind me of Kimberly Wu’s JOY concept from 2008. While I was intrigued by the concept images that have been floating around when it surfaced on NOTCOT.org, i didn’t expect to love it as much as i did in person! The sketches are stunning. The attention to details - fascinating! And in person, in the glow of sunset, it really is hard to take your eyes off of. I love that they created the concept and sketches situations of it for Desert, Polar, and Jungle situations using camel, penguin, and monkey icons - even on the tires, which sadly didn’t make it into the final model. However, they did slip in the side view mirror warning: “Penguins, camels, and other wild animals in mirror may be closer than they appear.” Mercedes, please make this into a toy car model - or an R/C car - or a 3D printable R/C car shell… because it is adorable, and would make for some ridiculously fun photoshoots with action figures.
Take a look at the sketches, details, teaser video (the video is pretty epic) - then the unveiling of the full sized model at Mister C in Beverly Hills tonight. There are a LOT of pictures, but there was too much fun not to share! See it all on the next page…
Here’s the latest from our resident zoologist and London based editor, Justine Aw.
Last night we attended a “Rumble in the Jungle” at the Barbican Centre, a celebration to mark the launch of Feasting with Bompas & Parr, the brand new cookbook from the dynamic duo of jellymongers Sam Bompas and Harry Parr, which follows their successful Cocktails and Jelly. Of course, to take it even further than the last - this cookbook plays music when you open it! (See the video on the next page… )
The celebrations included a steaming cauldron of tropical Guinness punch, a Ziggurat of Flavour, an array of exotic cocktails and some incredible botanicals such as the super shiny Pollia Condensata Berry and Sechuan button, which give an almost electrical sensation! An unbelievable feast for all senses for sure - take a look at all of the fun and more on the next page!
You can always rely on Hard Graft for beautifully designed, luscious leather/felt, timeless pieces to hold all of your goods (digital and otherwise) while you run around with surprising versatility - their bag designs always transform to fit your needs with the way you can change straps, etc to carry them differently. And i always imagine them aging beautifully with more and more character coming out of them as the leather gets worn down. For the 5th NOTCOT Holiday Giveaway, they are giving one lucky reader their new hand made Laptop Bag #OldFashioned.
“WHAT SETS IT APART? Über premium vegetable tanned Italian leather with contrasting tan piping, the small golden logo and our special red and white ribbon, perfectly positioned and the long thin straps which make the bag more versatile and functional. You can either use them as a shoulder strap, wrapped around to carry the bag as a clutch or cross them over for the backpack.
The Laptop bag is strong and sturdy. The leather is thick enough to feel healthy and rich. It’s finished with a satin glossiness which captures and reflects your surroundings. The leather develops a caramel tint slowly over time the more you expose it to sunlight. Measures 39cm x 28cm 6cm (15.4” x 11” x 2.4”). Fits your 13” MacBook Pro Retina and even the 15” MacBook Pro Retina (without sleeve) inside a padded pocket. Lined with black cotton.”
