Acca Kappa

accakappa1.jpgAcca Kappa ~ an “Italian legend of luxury” ~ upon walking into the store at Century City i was told that this ancient brand was used on the royals. But what really drew me in was all the beautiful use of various woods (i’m a sucker for wood bristle combs… since my ancient Aveda paddle brushes as a kid, to the various Koh-i-noor ones i’ve recently used)… and their men’s line! Made me wish i was a guy so i had a good excuse to buy the “1869 Series Shave Bowl & Soap: Hand made bowl with East African Wenge Wood contains vegetable-based Almond shave foam” from their men’s 1869 line. I don’t think you fully understand how beautiful that bowl is! And the curvature of their nail brushes were amazing too (also the soap dish you can see below). They have hair brushes in both the darker woods as well as the lighter hand finished beechwood… and new to the store was the extremely eco friendly Bioceta line of 100% biodegradable line of hair brushes, nail brushes, body brushes, etc… they are made from a unique cellulose that is extracted from cotton. Anyhow, i was quite taken by the line, and i think the 1869 men’s line is definitely on my shopping list for the guys this year… as usual lots of pics from their site as well as some of the actual store (the store girl was nice enough to let me take a few!).

Oooold Whisky

wrinklewhiskey.jpgAlso part of the OPOS.it 2007 exhibition tackling the concept of “old” ~ this is Oooh! Design’s Ooold Whisky Wrinkle Bottle. Also, you have to visit their website to hear their Ooooooh! sound effect as the page loads. Made me smile. But, back to the bottle. We all know that when it comes to alcohol and waters, the packaging really is 90% of things. (Yes yes, taste matters too, but once you’ve found your selection of great tastes, what makes you pick the bottle off the shelf? Exactly.) This bottle design manages to add so much character to the whisky itself through its “aged” wrinkles. Can’t you envision a full line of these with various degrees of wrinkling depending on age? Or that botox’d LA bottle that confuses you a bit? (Tastes like a 40 year old, bottle looks like 18?).

“Wrinkle Bottle is a packaging project that dramatically highlight an intrinsic peculiarity of high quality spirits: the aging. The realistic reproduction of human wrinkles engraved on the bottle, ironically puts up the long years that make precious a spirit. It’s at the same time object decoration and information about the product. It’s a way to emphasize the quality of the spirit and a fine object with strong decorative valence, ideal for high level products.”

Respect Old School

respectold.jpgRespect Old School. It’s not just a cane. It’s a cane with a stamp at the base… so you can leave a trail… or stamp the world with intent… Talk about an interesting twist on subversive street art, or turning the tables on those disrespectful young whippersnappers with the graffiti and what nots. This project by the italian Glue Glue Design: “We are living in a “contemporary” society that paradoxically lives more and more on revival. We think that, thanks to the connection with the concept of respect the old men can ransom his social condition from without purpose and obsolete to “cool” and “in”: how? Using a “young” and “contemporary” language, and shifting to the present the field of action of an old man, whose thoughts are mostly memories that come from the past and are not able to mark the contemporary culture anymore.” I can’t stop staring, and have the sudden urge to start sporting a cane… imagine all the various stamps you could swap on? Only thing missing in this design? It should be self inking, and there should be a button on the handle of the cane to put the cap on, or perhaps the stamp sucks up into the cane so it doesn’t make contact with the ground as you walk, and when you push the button it stamps it - i mean seriously, you expect the old guy to bend over and take the cap off? It’s asking to be lost. And its SO much harder to be discreet in your street art being seen doing that. Found this over at Young Designer. This was part of the OPOS.it project.

Annie Vought

0924vought1.jpgNOTCOT Note: Here’s another article from Anna Corpron of Sub-Studio!

I came across Annie Vought’s Papercuts series on Stumble Upon and can hardly believe that her work is real. She painstakingly cuts the script text out of letters and notes. The result is an incredible tapestry of letters, lines, and shadows created by pinning the work up for display. Obsessive, tedious, and gorgeous.

Greenyc

itseasy1.jpgGreeNYC ~ is a new NYC campaign to make NY the greenest city in the country. This campaign is absolutely adorable, the animation combined with the music… with sound effects that make me think of eureka’s castle and nick jr. are too cute for words… great use of simple flat vectors and noteworthy typography… and that pigeon! My favorite screenshots are below, view the large video here, it is a collaboration between Hunter Gatherer and Todd St. John/Ryan Waller.

Ost trifft West

chinagerm.jpgI just got im’d this article from the China Digital Times about Yang Liu’s “Ost trifft West” ~ East versus West. It is an incredible infographic exhibition simply depicting some humorous differences between the cultures. Above (l-r) are queuing, a weekend street scene (personal space!), in a restaurant, and self. This exhibition was live in German Ministry of foreign affairs May - June 07, images of the actual exhibition are below from Yang Liu’s site. If you check out the pictures carefully, you can see some pieces that seem to depict coke vs tea, waking over a spot versus around it, seeing with your eye versus a camera… and from her site, it sounds like there will be a book coming!

Canon 40d and Red Monkey

camera.jpgMy camera situation has evolved quite a bit the last two months… first there was the addition of the 10-22mm lens to my ancient (2+ yr old) Digital Rebel. And with that i needed a better bag to carry it in (enter, Botkier Satchel), which was perfect running around Paris. But the day i got back, i couldn’t resist and picked up the new Canon 40d, and that coupled with the 10-22 has been my baby i’ve been carrying everywhere. The reviews are just starting to roll in, but overall, i’m smitten. And as much as people seem to hate having to manual focus on live view (and there are some work arounds) ~ i’m just thrilled to be able to see it live at all! And the fact that you can zoom in so ridiculously close while in live view, actually makes the focusing far better than i could have ever done on my slr… combined with a 3” screen this is really fun for my “put camera on floor to shoot” tendencies - and it’s SO much faster! And feels more solid than the newer rebels.

Anyhow, next phase of camera evolution… i need a good strap. My old camo neoprene one from high school is reaching the end of its lifespan (it used to be on my AE-1). So when i saw these Red Monkey straps at Acquire, i think it was love at first site. Rockstar strap for my camera? I can pick any leather i want? Distressed, dyed, painted… And these guys are the real deal (their press archives are full of rockstars who have been wearing their guitar straps, and their watches seem big with the celeb set too… very cool story behind them as well)!

Contraforma MW

contraforma1.jpgNoticed this Contraforma MW Collection over at Pan Dan. Designed by Nauris Kalinauskas, 2007. “Old within new. A unique piece, even the oldest house can be revived with contemporary design- gives a new breath of life to an old favorite space. The product distinguishes with combined innovative and traditional materials: the frame is made of powder coated, laser-cut metal combined with the natural old solid wood - a touch of purest nature. None the less interesting is the shape - a stylistic mix of decades. An eclectic is brought to a delicate purity. MW is an allusion to antiquity and at the same time it is obviously an object of contemporary design. It comes with a real story of one hundred years original solid wood which at those times was a part of a wooden Lithuanian house.” And isn’t it funny how they use the VHS in the product shot?

Vers Speakers

vers1.jpgJust noticed these woody ipod speakers over at Acquire, and i can’t stop staring. There is something about clean sleek wood and tech that just gets me every time. This is the Vers 2x - Hand-crafted cherry veneer cabinet - no two alike - 2 3” custom-engineered 15 watt speakers - Dual port design for deeper bass - Advanced 14 function remote control with 25’ range (I wish there was a pic of this!) - 3.5mm audio cable for use with other MP3 players (i’m SO glad people are not locking you in to ONLY use it for your ipod these days). Its MSRP is $179… and they are even listing Target as one of the places to go find it in mid-Oct.

Fashion Sidekicks

sidekickinmain.jpgWow, what happens when you give 15 fashion designers sidekicks to do what they want with? Some pretty crazy fashion/artsy looking phones. My favorites are below, and the stand out is definitely this Justin Giunta for Subversive one… gold bees, everywhere. Also interesting were the cool bags that some of the designers made to go with these… like betsey johnson, coach, tommy hilfiger, diane von furstenberg, and more… (even philip lim and j. lo did phones ~ crazy group they arranged) These are all being auctioned on eBay, and you have 4 days left! 100% Benefiting Fashion Targets Breast Cancer.

Dominique Cohen for Target

dominiquecohenmain.jpgDominique Cohen for Target. You’ve probably heard about it. It was everywhere, as every GO Target collection seems to be. You’ve seen the ribbon pendant and broach. Well, me too. What i didn’t expect was that when running over to Target for a quick errand, the collection would actually catch my eye and have me hovering at the Target jewelry case. In fact i have seldom even looked in that direction when i go (i tend to go to target to grab method goods and toys usually). Beyond the adorably edgy. fun, gothy display, a fresh shipment had just come in, and i saw a pile of the gorgeous satin pouches and ring/earring boxes taunting me. So when i came back to it three times, i finally gave in and played with a few of the pieces, and purchased this Dominique Cohen Lace-Covered Bead Necklace with Ribbon Tie. The attention to packaging details surprised me, i didn’t realize that they created a series of brown satin corded bags (with a nice beige satin interior) printed with Dominique Cohen for Target on them, and the necklaces even have a tiny little “dom” tag on the silk ribbon. So if you’re ready for an overdose of closeups, as well as my roundup of some of the best pieces, and pics from the LA launch party, as well as some of Dominique Cohen’s high end collection that inspired these pieces… click on.

Zuckerman’s Creatures

creaturemain.jpgI stopped everything when i saw Swiss Miss’ post on Andrew Zuckerman’s latest book Creature. And then i clicked through to his site to see more page previews, only to find an incredibly gorgeous site… a peek inside the upcoming book… AND two amazing videos! The kind of amazing videos that you can watch 10 times over, and still need to see them again (screenshots below). Basically the photography of these animals on that clean white space is just breathtaking, and seeing video of him shooting it as well as the book being printed is just the ultimate tease. The book can be pre-ordered at Amazon, and is printed by Chronicle Books. *Swoon*

View At…

View At… is an incredible collection of panaoramic/google map mashups that JuanK just shared over at NOTCOT.org. And they are breathtaking… suddenly feeling the travel bug again, and just clicking through these (with their great ability to navigate and float through these worlds), i almost feel like i’m an arm chair traveler bouncing across the globe. As you can see, you can even embed them… so click and drag to explore Collioure - Chapelle St Vincent: “Famous as one of the most beautiful village in France, Collioure welcomed Van Gogh and Matisse who enjoyed the light and the colors of this place.” A few more random screenshots and panoramas i love below, but for the full experience, you must go see View At.org. Also try clicking the full screen icon on any of these panoramas, they will be a nice little escape between all the working… also don’t forget to tilt up and down, not just left and right… (i.e. you can see the feet and the tip of the eiffel tower below!)

Blu Dot’s Bonnie & Clyde

bludot1.jpgSome people have late night food cravings. Me? I apparently have furniture cravings at 3am. Was about to fall asleep, then noticed the latest Design Public email in my inbox, and suddenly i’m wide awake lusting after these new pieces from Blu Dot. Above is the Bonnie and Clyde sectional. As if they didn’t have me at the name, i just love the clean simplicity and lack of cushion cracks to fall into (i spent the last two nights on a sectional, and i’m hurting all over!). You can also get Bonnie solo (but what fun is that? and she’s also featured below in ‘dark roast’)… she’s the one with the two arms. Clyde apparently doesn’t have any arms… interpret that as you will. Ok, i feel a bit silly rereading what i just typed and realizing that i’m referring to the sectional pieces by name. Incredible what a great name can do for a COUCH… suddenly these simple pieces have character and backstories! Also, i’d love to be curling up in the Nook Bed, it looks so sleek yet cozy (and matches the couch nicely) - also featured below!
