Beau Soleil Bag

beaubag.jpgOn more affordable designer options on green friendly reusable shopping bag options… Beau Soleil has stepped in with their new Beau Bag. “A stylish grocery sack! Price is affordable to entice people to help the environment without shelling out a lot of cash.” It is $44 at ShopBop, $40 at Beau Soleil, and $25 (shipping in Jan) at El Sueño Verde. The typography was nice and clean on this one, and its great that there are snap pockets on all sides (including inside!) for all those random magazines, packs of gum, keys, etc! ~ see below for closeups.

New Feature: Live Footers

tsorg.jpgThe footers for NOTCOT.org and TasteSpotting are now live and actually showing the latest posts on the other sites in mini-form! I designed these a few months ago, but didn’t have the time/resources to get them coded to show you the latest, so i’d been making them by hand in the interim… and now that Dan has joined me full time to work on our sites, this is the first of many exciting new features and ideas we’re working on! So next time you’re checking out the sites, take a look at the far bottom to see what is new across the network! (and if you have ideas for other features we may not have thought of, feel free to leave a note)

Ciao Ciao, Pleo

byepleo.jpgPleo’s two week stint here at NOTCOT is up, so just packaged him back up to ship him home… its been an interesting experience having a baby robodino wandering around as i work. So what’s my final conclusion about the user experience of having him around? Honestly, its a really cool robot. An extremely unique experience for people of all ages, but i’m not sure that he has what it takes to hold your attention after he captures it with his inexplicably adorable sounds and behaviors that tug on your heartstrings. I found he’s most amusing when treated like a lap cat… he sits and whines and basically purrs and howls happily if you just pet him constantly, tickle his feet, etc. When left to his own devices he kept wandering *very very slowly* around the room, finding objects, rubbing up against them, eating the air, calling out for more attention or else falling asleep. The hardest part about any robotics right now, is throughout your playtime with him, it is impossible to forget that he’s a robot. As cute as he is batting his deep blue eyes at you, the sounds of the gears grind on constantly ~ although more quiet than most, its still hard to ignore. Also impressive is that he really is one robust little guy, he can probably survive some of the worst of kids and still keep doing his thing (with the exception of his skin perhaps which doesn’t seem to be on quite the same level as his robotics). I wasn’t able to yet play with programming my own behaviors and personalities for him, but when that happens i can certainly see the amount of time you’d spend futzing with him increase dramatically, but for now i did check out his *guard dog* mode which was pretty hilarious… pop the personality on an SD card and into his slot… and suddenly he barks at anything that moves!

Bottom line? I’m glad he’s wandered through my life for these few weeks, and i’ve had friends and family all amused by playing with him, its fascinating to see how far the tech has come for this… and with a $350 price tag, he’s certainly an *it* toy worth owning for the kids and gadget lovers who have it all… especially when the ability to really hack him up and give him personalities and behaviors of your choosing is ready! And are you curious about seeing what’s beneath Pleo’s rubbery exterior? More below…

From The Amazon

amazon.jpgOn random holiday gifts ~ my father and sister just got back from the Amazon ~ and brought me a pile of amazonian craftiness. It’s pretty incredible what they can carve into a brazil nut! (the snake, octopus, and ant)… and although these certainly aren’t the same as getting to have their incredible adventures living on a boat ~ fishing and exploring the Amazon ~ wrestling caymans ~ capsizing dingies ~ following monkeys ~ playing football barefoot on the beach ~ and watching a million and one species of insects smack into the boats lights nightly… these are still pretty fascinating! Also check out the spear below that you tie a string to, mount on a bamboo stick, and use to fish the old fashioned way…

Party Popper Chandelier

popperchan.jpgIn getting ready for another new year (Yay! 2008! I have no idea why i’m so excited for this one.) ~ just rediscovered this party popper chandelier by Stuart Haygarth, who collected up 1000 exploded party poppers on 01.01.00 after the MIllenium celebrations in London. Each popper is individually hung, and apparently create quite the organic swarm when hit (be it by a breeze or a bat). If he seems familiar, perhaps you’ve also seen some of his other found object chandeliers… like the one out of sun glasses? (images below!)

Zip Tie Rings

ziptie.jpgI’m sure by now you’ve noticed that casting the everyday into silver and making it some wearable form like jewelry is instant subversive luxe. From plastic vampire teeth for belt buckles and cocktail swords as necklaces, to forget me knot strings around the finger and peeled bark as cuffs… so part of me isn’t at all surprised to see that someone has gone and cast zip ties in silver as rings. In fact, i can’t help but wonder why it wasn’t done sooner. Granted i’d probably have to turn down any man who dared propose we marry with a pair of these, the concept certainly has a lot of potential. Personally, i feel like zip ties are the new duct tape… from tying back cables, to tying plants to poles, looping through dishrags to have a loop to hang them from, tying bad guys up instead of handcuffs, locking your suitcases… (i’m sure you have more examples to insert here)… these rings are from Metalnat by Natalie Gomensoro at Supermarket.

Ghost Prints

casper1.jpgAlso in the Coudal Swap Meat ~ Four glow in the dark ghost prints by Billy Davis ~ “This set of four prints was hand-screened at Crosshair Press in Chicago, and each features a glowing ghost in various ill-advised endeavors.” Adorable… yet just twisted enough.

Lucky White Squirrels

squirrelposters.jpgI love that space where biology meets design meets infographics… i just found this awesome set of two Lucky White Squirrel Posters by Moi Moi at Coudal’s Swap Meat Gifted! “The Lucky White Squirrels limited edition print set was originally produced as two 4’x 8’ panels for a squirrel themed art exhibition held at a Toronto gallery located across from a park where a resident population of albino squirrels live. Working with the punnet square and the network diagram this idiosyncratic info-graphic based artwork explains why seeing an albino squirrel is lucky. The first print, a network diagram, illustrates the mix of genes it would take to create albino progeny from a pair of squirrels each carrying the recessive gene for albinism. The second, in real numbers, illustrates squirrel for squirrel the 1:20,000 odds that this would occur.” Purchaseable here for $60.
