One of the most surreal and perhaps even magical aspects of night photography is when the camera manages to capture views that even your naked eye couldn’t imagine. To turn that sensitivity so far up that every seemingly dim/dark speck of light simply glows is stunning. One of the photographers who’s night photos we love does this beautifully ~ Stephanie Izzo’s Lumiére series of magically sparkling postcard like images are gorgeous! Take a peek at her view on New York on the next page… makes me almost ready to hop a plane over now!
Rhinos in flight, electric multicopters and a 3D scanned forest are all part of this week’s roundup from NOTCOT.org. To find out more about each post, click on its individual image.
So excited to announce this fun little easter egg hunt of sorts launching on NOTCOT.org and NotCouture today! We’ve teamed up with our friends at Bonobos to hide some of their models in their signature pants around the sites throughout the week… and if you find them, click them! The first 50 people to find the pants every day, get the $25 Bonobos credit plus free shipping both ways (min $50 purchase)! So happy hunting and shopping! Also, keep an eye out for the special little guy in paisley pants… he’ll give you a little something extra…
As for Bonobos, they are the online menswear store named after the endangered promiscuous great ape species that is a close relation of the chimpanzee… the one’s that started off a few years ago with the goal of giving men a pant option (the secret is in the curved waistline) that vowed to put an end to the saggy rear end that one-cut-fits-all options provide, and over the years it has evolved into a full fledged men’s store with everything from pants to suits and shirts to sweaters and shoes and even accessories. So whether you’re in need of a wardrobe update, or looking to get in on that holiday shopping early… go find the Bonobos models hiding on NOTCOT.org and NotCouture all week for the shopping codes!
This featured video series on beautiful visual inspiration is brought to you by FIAT! Thank you FIAT for your support of NOTCOT!
First things first, if you haven’t seen it, you must check out The Third & The Seventh. It is a stunning film ~ and I love that Alex Roman asks you to “Fullscreen it, please.” A masterful mix of 3D modeling and rendering of both designer objects and places that exist in reality (Like Kahn’s library at Phillips Exeter Academy) seamlessly combined with the fictitious through 3dsmax, Vray, AE and Premiere. But surprisingly, when it reaches the uncanny valley side of the digital, it’s hard to appreciate just how much went in to this film… until you see the incredible making of below!
Tattoos & Tentacles is a book by photographer Julian Murray… and it is precisely what it sounds like (though the octopi don’t seem to be alive)… and it might be NSFW, but there’s a SFW peek inside the book on the next page!
Husky safaris, ghost towns and Italy’s macabre past are all part of this week’s roundup from NotVentures. To find out more about each post, click on its individual image.
What to do with all of those old toys? Well over at Freshome, just found out that you can commission Evil Robot Designs to merge your toys into a bespoke sculptural lamp… then finish it off in a single color high gloss finish… fun concept, playful execution… take a look at some closeup examples on the next page.

While in Las Vegas, popped into the awesome men’s store, Stitched in the Cosmopolitan… great to finally see their wall of Macallan 18 lockers and bespoke luxuries… what caught my eye most were the new leather cased metal flasks, shot glasses, and travel bars by Daines & Hathaway. The Triple Bar Set in particular is stunning (and you can order it by calling Stitched) ~ beautiful cylindrical leather case that resembles an old slr lens case with shoulder strap, and when unzipped you have three equal wedge flasks to fill with your libation of choice… and perfect to share with friends since each flask has a little shot glass above the cap. Take a peek at the details on the next page!

While exploring Las Vegas for SEMA, I love to escape into the least vegas feeling Vdara in City Center. Of course this means being surrounded by the stunning mix of modern architecture and large scale modern sculptures galore. One can’t help but stare at Nancy Rubins’ Big Edge in the center of the huge roundabout ~ with boats somehow forming a huge tree light structure… with more than 200 aluminum boats — canoes, rowboats and flat-bottomed boats strung together with steel wire into a colorful cluster held together with cantilevers, they manage to look nearly in motion, as if exploding apart! Nancy Rubins has been making these large boat structures for some time now and Big Edge is a larger version of her “Big Pleasure Point” in the Lincoln Center in New York, with similar pieces around the country. Perhaps one of the best parts of being placed in the center of City Center in Las Vegas is the ability for everyone to enjoy it in so many different lighting situations, so Shawn Sims had a little late night photoshoot last night wandering up close to it to share some of its amazing looks at night! Take a peek at all of the pics on the next page!

Sure the new California Driver’s Licenses started in Oct 2010… but since mine was about to expire, i’ve only just gotten bored enough to get one and stare at it up close… WAY up close… with the microscope. It’s quite awesome seeing where they went all Toys R Us with the backwards R… hidden little strings of text in microscopic ascii art fashion nearly invisible to the naked eye… initials and birth year are tucked all over… some birthdays and signatures are raised… when you hold it up to the light you can see the state bear appear out of tiny holes… So take a peek at the details and some of the beautiful patterns they used super close up on my new driver’s license!

On fun new thermos/water bottle options, just came across this Cocoon Flask from Mar Mar Co., which debuted at London Design Week. Love that it’s packaging is in an inflatable “air box” case to protect it. The flask is designed by Torsten Neeland, and apparently it can keep liquids hot or cold for 3 hours. It comes in both matte and gloss finishes and holds 500mL. Something about the design reminds me of little gas cartridges… and i’m curious what the materials are like… and what the top lip is like if it all unscrews? Does that mean you can use the bottle with just the clear part? Anyhow, while i go look in to it all more ~ take a peek at close ups on the next page!
