Backseat Kiss

backseatkiss.jpg
So cute. Monday… bit slow on the get go - but how adorable are there Backseat Kiss pieces? I like the little details - like they bothered to embroider little robots with hearts.

Treonauts Hands On

treo10th.jpg
I know i showed you this limited edition treo 650 before, but i’m a bit obsessed with it today - and just found this great hands on review of it over at Treonauts. The coating of the whole phone is the same as that great thin subtle rubbery coating that the hardcase has… i can’t stand how slippery the current one is. Tempting.

Inside a Marc by Marc Jacobs Bag

marcbag.jpg

To me, Marc Jacobs can do no wrong (even though some of his stuff is really a bit nuts). There’s nothing terribly special about this bag… until you take a closer look at the lining. Looks like a regular old paisely print but there’s actually bits of skeletons floating around, like an arm here, and rib cage there. There are also skulls worked into the print. I think it represents us notcot folks pretty well (or me at least)… unassuming on the outside, perhaps a little (playfully?) sinister on the inside.

Inner Mess

innermess.jpgThis is the new “organizer” (perhaps its more a mess-pile-maker?) called Harry, designed by Reinhard Schmoelzer for Mocha It comes in two sizes, and an array of colors, and is basically your catchall in the form of a mess of maleable wires ready to do your bidding. So bend away - have a cluster everywhere, put many together and have a wall to suspend all your crap… or toothbrushes… or tech… or jewelry… so versatile! Fun idea.

Kehinde Wiley

blackclassics.jpg
[First things first, click the pic to see it bigger] Kehinde Wiley is an LA native, that holds a SF Art Institute BFA and Yale MFA - and Gen Art Pulse just did quite the e-newsletter on him (which by the way, is one of the only newsletters these days i actually look forward to!). He’s found a niche in brining the back the glory days of paintings where you imortalize men and women in larger than life gold framed paintings… they were big in the days of kings, and even just a few generations back (there are even quite a few of these at the family house in asia of my grand/great-grand parents)… you know the type - you’ve seen them in any art history and history class. Wiley has put a spin on them and brought this grandeur back to the modern day, imortalizing important Black figures in our lives today in a similar style - but with that modern flair that jumps out so nicely at you. He’s was even comissioned to do the portraits of all the VH1 Hip Hop Honor Honorees in 2005. Its really beautiful breathtaking work - and the idea is pretty sweet. Pity that his work doesn’t cover other people as well! But maybe it will be a start to help inspire others to take on the old school portrait styles and reinvent them for today.

Inkblots

wallpaperink.png
What do you see? Flocked inkblots on wallpaper, you say? Correct! “10 original Rorschach inkblots flocked onto and camouflaged within a classical damask pattern”, by Portia Wells. She also did a series of portraits of the West Coast… “Identities are constructed through the items we own— they begin to act as portraits of ourselves. Silhouettes are often referred to as the poor man’s portrait and are thought to reveal a sort of inner truth. ” They feature silhouettes of macs, new balanace, nalgenes, timbuk2, dior and more of our lifestyle cliches.

God of MySpace (Design)

myspacedroo.jpg
Those my MySpace friends, are MySpace pages. I kid you not. They work, they don’t violate the TOS - and yes, they are that pretty and there are many more after the jump, so try not to drool on the keyboard. Now that you’ve taken a peek at his handiwork, meet the man behind it - 17 year old Androo is a high school junior nearby in Pasadena - and hopes to get in to Art Center (is there really any question about this? Art Center readers - time to do your part!) And what’s he have to say about his MySpace abilities? “I am not a myspacial freak, I just design on myspace, beacuse well, I am not yet a professional, meaning i have no clients, no money, and no where to do web design, so i do it here. Word.” Go be his friend here. And those of you wanting to hire him - be warned, there’s a waitlist.

p.s. keeps the myspace adds coming, i love seeing how briliantly creative NOTCOT readers are - and how else am i supposed to find genius via myspace?

Rants + a call for help.

do.png
Everyone needs to read this article. Michael Bierut’s insights on the critical nature of context in the life and death of logos is priceless… and i am starting to think i need to put together a pamphlet for prospective logo clients, because there is so much in that article which combined with some quotes and images of great logos (recontextualized of course) would be far more efficient, than any client discussion.

That said, i feel rambly tonight - and want to put a little potential call for help out to all of you. NOTCOT.org as well as linking the MySpace page to the public - has more than opened my eyes to how many incredibly talented creatives are reading this site - your finds are brilliant, and NOTCOT.com has become that much better from the contributions you all send in. The consulting/design studio side of NOTCOT is picking up, and that’s been taking some of my time/energy away from here… and the problem with the internet really is that the more you read, the more you find. The more you find, the more you need to read, and then its 6am again. I can’t find it all, and i know you find a lot that i miss - so anyone have the guts to step up and contribute to NOTCOT? Be it little articles, an editorial, a designer’s rant/insight? I’m practical, i’d rather have many writers giving us the piece of a lifetime, than two forcing something out every day. Bottomline, our niche is inspiration for creativity (yes, i know, “can she be more vague?”, but regular readers should know what i mean)… Drop me an email! We love trying new things, so don’t be shy! jaw-at-notcot-dotcom

Velvet Banana

velvetbanana.jpg
Velvet Banana. “Extensive graphics, which arise as a musical performance. The designs pretend to express all the vitality and energy that emerges in the live concerts and songs featuring our favorite bands.” [They ‘pretend’? I think they DO!] The company name arises as a homage to the Velvet Underground and their Warhol Banana cover. And i’m loving the packaging.

Imaginary Friends

Eduardo.jpg
Cartoon Network is my fishtank, its has been on in the background since high school. Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends - has a BLOG! Not too many posts, but some great images. I love seeing the rough sketches of the development of Eduardo and his skull belt. They should sell Eduardo’s belt. And Coco is such a nut.

Amex Butterfly

butterflyamex.jpg
There are gimmicks and there are - American Express Gold Card gimmicks… sleek, sexy, and i’m sure intentionally flashy. Introducing the Butterfly. The card literally folds in half to fit in this keychain case. Its actually pretty enough to grab with merely your keys and cellphone. You can take it out fully to pay, only half way to swipe, or (according to the demo) just hand them the case (but i forsee many a confused waiter). Now when are they going to add the RFID tag so i can swipe the Butterfly at 7-11’s like the Blue card?

Silence.

silence_BILD7.jpg
If ever i were to fall for a bed, this is the one. Just as the day didn’t seem like it could get any better, i love this one. I like bed frames that have the tilt in the headboard, AND you can put stuff on it. It floats beautifully in a room like a work of art, and still managed to look lushiously inviting. This is the Silence bed by Zeitraum Moebel.

Black Tie

treo650_blacktie_edition.jpg
Happy 10th bday to Palm. They are releasing this special “Black Tie” edition of the Treo 650 (which i guess is only something us GSM folk can crave, since everyone else has moved on to the 700 and 700p?) - bundled with this hardcase and a stylus. My focus here is actually more on the hardcase, when i first got the treo back in december, i couldn’t find ANY cases i actually liked - then at CES the palm rep had this great case i loved - and then shattered my excitment by telling me it was just a prototype… but there it is. Something about that sleek look of it just gets me.
