Max Neutra’s Bunnies

bunny0.jpg Wandering down Abbot Kinney, i was stopped in my tracks by Max Neutra’s bunny mural! Naturally this lead to an instagram pic ~ and then an internet search when i got home… leading me to his website and facebook page… which lead to more pictures of the making of the mural as well as his solo show earlier this year at the Cave Gallery with bunnies galore… and even stand alone wooden bunnies that have been captured posing all over the world! Take a peek at Max Neutra’s incredible bunnies and more on the next page!

Bob Croslin’s Bird Series

bcbarnswallow.jpg The latest from London-based editor and resident zoologist, Justine Aw.

The photographs that make up this bird series from photographer Bob Croslin are striking. With clean black backgrounds and incredibly sharp focus, there are no distractions from the beautiful features of Croslin’s avian subjects. The series captures injured animals from The Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary in the Gulf Coast of Florida. The sanctuary has been helping injured birds for 40 years and has rehabilitated thousands of individuals and the species range from delicate swallows to the heftier spoonbills and pelicans. I love how the individuals look so composed, almost defiant in their portraits. See some more of our favorite images from the series on the next page!

Disney Research 3D Printed Optics

3dprint1.jpg 3D printed light bulbs that play with the way light is distributed… a 3D printed toy that’s responsive to a little girl with its digital eyes… LEDs embedded right into your 3D print while printing… 3D printable sensors, buttons, and switches… even a mobile 3D display created by projecting on internal bubbles within a 3D printed model. These are all possible now ~ and demonstrated in the latest project to come from Disney Research Pittsburgh - “Printed Optics” by Karl D.D. Willis, Eric Brockmeyer, Scott E. Hudson, Ivan Poupyrev.

Changing perspectives on how 3D prints works, this project both interrupts the printing process (to insert electronics), and also plays with the capabilities of the 3D printing itself to manipulate the way light behaves within the final print, turning a 3D print right out of the printer into “unique display surfaces, novel illumination techniques, custom optical sensors, and robust embedded components can be digitally fabricated for rapid, high fidelity, customized interactive devices.” While the material they are printing in isn’t your makerbot/consumer level printing (yet!) - this combination of UV cured resin and a special completely clear resin designed specifically for optical uses, creates the ability to create “light pipes” which function much like fiber optics. The possibilities with the direction of this research add a whole new level of interactivity to 3D prints! (Read the full paper here!) See them in action in the video and images on the next page…

Valet: Travel. Curated.

valet0a.jpg The last few months have been a non-stop burst of trips trailing from Los Angeles to Nashville and Cincinnati (and the roads between) to Istanbul, San Diego, Linz, Venice, London, Florence and more… The biggest difference this summer? More personal trips than work trips! (Though many overlap!) Ultimately it made me realize how insanely picky i’ve become when picking my own hotels… and finding the awesome, not so touristy, fun spots to check out!

So, on new online experiences to help with such dilemmas, enter - Valet! Launched by our friend and jetsetter, Josh Spear with Aaron Rutledge, Valet is an exclusive new travel company filled with a carefully curated collection of hotels and travel guides with favorites from folks like Josh Rubin of CoolHunting, Jeff Staple, Ben Clymer of Hodinkee, and you can even find some of my favorites showing up on the site bit by bit. As they say, “Our curators are some of the most interesting and influential people in the world. For many of them, Valet was a safe place to finally share their city secrets.”

While this is just the beginning, there are nearly 100 hotels in over 50 cities around the globe in the system already ~ and in addition to the New York City guide, Shanghai is right around the corner! Being an exclusive, curated membership site they are looking to build a community for “creative professionals, tastemakers and frequent travelers who appreciate curation, design, and great value over bargain-basement price shopping and recommendations amassed from dozens of anonymous reviews.” And one of my favorite details of their system? On top of special benefits and pricing at some of my usual hotels… no physical card to add to my ever growing wallet! They’ve made their membership cards digital, so you can easily pull them up on your phone/laptop/Apple Passbook. Also keep an eye out for their upcoming iPhone and iPad apps.

You can apply here and use the code: NOTCOT to get in early and lock in the launch membership rate of $199/year. Ready to take a peek at what you can find inside Valet? See screenshots for a sneak peek inside Valet on the next page!

On fun and unexpected surprises, a Reebok FitList Box just arrived in the mail! For the launch of the Reebok FitList App on Spotify, the folks at DeepLocal created limited edition sneaker cases containing portable stereo speakers and sound reactive LED lights that glow in reaction to music, ambient sound, and even touch. (It’s oddly mesmerizing to tap the case and watch it light up and fade!) Most impressive is the fun video they created with athletes working out alongside a wall of these LED shoe boxes, and as they jump and run and work out. They’ve created 100 limited edition Reebok FitList boxes holding a pair of RealFlex Transition 2.0 shoes featuring an exclusive colorway (black with red soles!) just for the occasion. See the video, making of, and a peek inside the actual Reebok FitList Box and what powers it on the next page!

At NOTCOT, we often approach fashion no differently from anything else we write about ~ it’s all about great design and/or art/technology angles… we love beautifully intentional minimalism with incredible materials and added functionality that takes it over the top… So for this post, i had fun digging into our archives and beyond to round up some fun fashion that has a little extra something going on that you probably don’t expect at first glance! From the sleek jacket that will turn into a pouch (and pop up wrinkle-free in moments) to the tarp/blanket/jacket to the men’s dress jacket with secret reflective bits for biking in, to a sports bra that can monitor your heart rate and more!
