Goodmorning Widex

hearingaidw.jpgWow. This packaging is the most brilliant way to package a hearing aid i’ve ever imagined. Feel free to jump ahead and view the video below of the seemingly simple packaging in action… and then come back to finish reading. Basically for those who can’t hear… how do you help them experience a sound before even getting to the hearing aid within? You show them a soundwave. In action. They have used the plastic sleeve around the box to create the illusion of an animated soundwave as you push the interior box out. Not to mention the simple black and white nature of the design is just classy. My only problem with this design? I can see it being far too fun to just slide the box in and out to watch the soundwave move, and thus it would take too long to get to the actual hearing aid. I love this. Design is by Copenhagen based design studio Goodmorning, for Widex “high definition hearing”.

Mori Ex Cacao

skullchoc.jpgThe most tempting thing to grace my screen this morning is the D.L. & Co’s Mori Ex Cacao Skulls… Particularly this black Curious Chili “An eccentric blend of chilies and spices immersed in smooth chocolate ganache, generating a warmth that rises to an almost deadly heat, before leaving you spent, yet craving more.” Take a look at the other two skulls as well as the gift box trio below! In Bitter White Brandied Cherry and Scorched Caramel, how can you resist?

So that first pic is the Sony Bravia commercial for Egypt… they tossed more spools of thread down than i can count, and it is an incredible sight. While the bunnies were cool… watching that much thread come spinning down the side of pyramid just made my jaw drop… much like the bouncy balls and the paint! Anyhow, here are a few NOTCOT.org goodies to help you catch up/kick start the week. Happy Monday!

Vino de GlueGlue

orangeglass.jpgGlue Glue Design has two projects that are part of Vindesign 2007 i couldn’t resist. First, above is the brilliant idea of turning your citrus fruit into your wine glass! Can you imagine how nice your sangria could be in a glass like that? And talk about biodegradable… I wonder if something like pomegranate would work… And below, check out their interesting take on the Cork. With their reusable stopper you can actually use the original cork to help add leverage to pull it out… or you can just pull with your finger in the loop…

IKEA Toys

ikeatoy.jpgThere are some great toys over at IKEA that make me wish i was 2-3 again ~ their wooden toys are a great price (only 7.99!) and really fun minimal designs that would look great in any studio (and playroom?). Today Shade Elaine and i were wandering through the zoo of an IKEA in Palo Alto and ended up taking far too many pictures of brilliant and hilarious things we found (many of which we hadn’t seen in the catalog). So starting with our absolute favorites… here are the three “KLAPPARs” pull toys (FISK - fish, GRODA - frog, IGELKOTT - hedgehog) and the MULA pull toy where these little heads pop up with various faces as you roll along.

Please excuse the mediocre images, but i was feeling silly and didn’t really expect to post about the trip, so all pictures were taken with my pearl… but below there are pictures of these toys in the wild, crazy halloween masks (and the masks on giant suspended stuffed dragons), what appears to be a drunken beer bellied fox and its crazed baby/mini, some angry pill bug bags(?), nice new metal dog bowls, cute graduated cylindars (apparently dishwasher safe although so so thin), and fun acrylic sheet cut in the shape of a lamp and lightbulb with an LED.

Elemente

elemente.jpgI was approached by Elemente Magazine a few months back, and i hadn’t heard of them. Apparently they are “Canada’s Alternative Design Magazine” on Architecture + Design + Lifestyle + International (as it says on the cover)… and they have been Nominated Best New Magazine in Canada (also on the cover). Well this is definitely one not to pass up on the newstands ~ its a nice super glossy design mag filled with a lot of content similar to what you find here at NOTCOT. In fact the O2 Cocoon i previously wrote about turned up on the cover of the latest issue! They have nice clean layouts, great typography, and i do love the super glossy paper. After being quite impressed with the back issues Elemente editor, Angus MacKenzie sent over, i even agreed to write a few short pieces for the latest issue (first time being in print as a writer!)… so i couldn’t help but share a few quick pics with you this Friday evening. You can check out my blurbs online at Elemente ~ but for frequent readers, it’s nothing you haven’t seen here… new copy, but i covered the Puma Urban Mobility line, Oxo Corn Stripper, and Art + Cook for them. Also check out the Elemente site for more insight on what else you can find in their magazine.

Daedalus & Icarus

icarusanddaedelus.jpgDaedalus & Icarus, one of those classic myths that always ended in being told “and that’s why you should listen to your parents”… Can you blame the kid for flying too near the sun? Having his wings melt? Well how appropriate to have Tord Boontje, whose designs turn any space into tranquil fantasy world, reinterpret this father soon duo?

As you can guess the Icarus is the pair of wings suspended from above… and the newly released Daedalus is the brilliant inventor as the down to earth desk lamp. These beautiful pieces by Artecnica are made of polyester, and will certainly transform any room you place them in. Close up of the Daedalus below… [And for those of you who need to brush up on your ancient mythology - the Icarus page will catch you up]

Sub-Zero Wine Campaign

subzerowine.jpgI have such a love hate relationship with advertising ~ i have always admired and loved beautiful creative ads. And then i started off despising them on websites, and was completely torn when it came time to integrate them into my sites in an attempt to have this fun side project carry its own weight. And now? Apparently, now i can get *jealous* over cool ads that *other* sites get. So any designers and media buyers out there ~ if you’re ever feeling extra nice, help us get brilliantly designed campaigns to show off (and entertain our readers)! I must even admit there’s a tiny part of me that wants to even start putting up ads that i think are gorgeous ~ just b/c its nice to see them on the site… (even if they aren’t campaigns we landed) ~ silly isn’t it?

Ok rant done. It’s a weird friday. BUT here is the campaign i’m loving that triggered that little rant. I grew up with Sub Zero fridges, they always seemed larger than life when i was little… and it’s great to see this playful microsite they created for their Sub Zero wine storage systems. They have some great animated imagery of the Enemies of Wine ~ 1. Heat 2. Light 3. Vibration 4. Humidity. See close ups below. And on interesting new “conversational marketing” ideas, nice to see a company like them embracing the blogging medium with their Sub Zero Wine Blog of “insights and advice on all things wine” featuring experts giving their tips.

Hand Job: A Catalog of Type

handJob4.jpg

*Snicker* Yes, I love the cheeky title. Hand Job: A Catalog of Type by Michael Perry (published by Princeton Architectural Press) is full of unique and quirky hand-drawn typography. It makes me remember the days of junior high when I was trying so hard to establish my handwriting style, the years in high school when I embellished the letters on the notes I wrote to friends, and the random doodles that ended up on the margins of my lecture notes in college. Fifty-five typographers and graphic designers, including Geoff McFetridge and Deanne Cheuk, are featured in the book, and they are all listed in alphabetical order. Their names appear at the bottom of the pages which I found pretty handy for reference. Great to flip through for some quick inspiration, and I definitely want to start drawing words again to balance out the computer-based work I do! Some of my favorite pages from the book after the jump!

Fishing Knuckles & Peace Buttons

1011angliker1.jpgNOTCOT Note: Here’s another article from Anna Corpron of Sub-Studio!

Living in New York, I don’t get to fish much, but Sean and I both grew up fishing with our dads and have a healthy appreciation for an idyllic day on a river or lake. I would love to have Christina Angliker’s Fishing Knuckles - basically a bum’s fishing kit that you can keep with you at all times. Not only a fishing rod, Fishing Knuckles is a protective device and a fashion statement. Though, it might be a bit more fashion than function - I’m not sure how you could reel in a fish without cutting your hand on the line. Christina recently graduated from Pratt and her website is definitely worth checking out - I appreciate that she includes so much of her process on the site. Also, her Peace Buttons shown below are a beautiful physical interpretation of a “wound”…

p.s. if these feel familiar, these were also seen as NOTCOT.org #1599 back in the day.

Ambassador Stamps

stamping0.jpgWow. I think i just spent an hour looking at random vector logo cliparty designs for stamps, pillows, and buttons over at Ambassador Stamps that showed up in NOTCOT.ORG submissions from Jensche (it’s been fronted! But was so cool it needed a proper post as well). Basically these brilliant Swiss folks have been designing quite the playful selection of gorgeous graphics that you can choose for a stamp, throw pillow, or button… since 2002! There are basic graphics, and there are ones which you can customize with your slogan, company name, etc. And even cooler? You can fork over 89 euro, and give them your company name… and cross your fingers, close your eyes, and then see what you get in about 10 days. No refunds. But from the looks of the randomness they design that is SO fun, i’m extremely tempted. Best case scenario? You pay a mere 89 euro for the logo of your dreams? Looks like even Coudal has made one. [Beware: the UI is a bit messy ~ but the site is quite pretty.]

Ok, so enough about the really fun designs… now for the packaging and product, these aren’t just ANY stamps, they are uniquely shaped cone like stamps that are contained in screw capped ink pods of sorts (ink pad in the bottom). And they are packaged in specially designed cardboard boxes! (images of all that below). Sooooo tempting.

Eames Hacking

eameshack.jpgThese Eames Hacks cracked me up as soon as i saw the images over at Core77. This project is by Department of Industrial Design at The University of the Arts, Philadelphia’s students: Jared Delorenzo, Tim Peet, Alexandra Temple Powell, Tom Reynolds, Alie Thomer, and Andrew McCandlish. “These two pieces, the Eames toilet chair and the Eames child seat, are about breaking the status surrounding high design objects. Through physically invasive alterations, these once iconic, elite, forms are liberated from their old, restrained image. The project is not a critique of the Eames, but rather a fulfillment of their original ideals.”

How appropriate for this Eames 100th Anniversary. Also loving the way they cut the high chair leg holes… and that toilet is hilarious. More below!

NM 100th Christmas Book

nm100book.jpgThe extravagance of the Neiman Marcus Christmas Books are always an annual visual indulgence for me ~ majority of the pieces being laughably gaudy… and always a few that i covet (for my fantasy world)… it has become ritualistic page flipping, much like the annual IKEA catalogs. This year with their 100th Anniversary, it’s only MORE over the top ~ and as always, their fantasy gifts don’t disappoint ~ with everything from the $100,000 Touch Screen “Media Wall” to the Treetent hanging pod and a Swami “conversational robot”… But my favorite? The 100 ft long Dragon Topiary constructed from 15 indigenous plants… next year i’d need the moat to go with it… and then a castle? More pics below ~ and also of my *other* hopeful prediction of comebacks… the Steamer Trunk! I’ve been coveting an old style one to accommodate my trips where i throw my life in my car and take off for what can be anything from a few days to a few months… must have a way to stash it all nicely, like a pop up insta-closet. But check out the Steamer Trunk Bar below…

Neiman Marcus Pop Up Book

nmpopup.jpgFunny how the things of the past are making such a great comeback this season. Just this week i was joking (ok i was pretty serious) that NOTCOT needed a good pop up book ~ inspired by some adorably “PULL ME” screaming tabs that Linhchi designed in one of our new mock ups… and then i open the 100th Anniversary Neiman Marcus Christmas Book 2007, and what do they have on the last page? Yup, limited edition Neiman Marcus Pop-Up Book! And it looks incredible ~ not to put down my brilliant bert and ernie pop up books of my childhood, but that girl’s pop up dress is made up of tons of photos! And in the pics below, that isn’t a real person looking at the page closely ~ its a pop up person! Anyhow, i need to get my hands on one of these to do a proper book review clearly. Oh, and in proper Neiman Marcus style ~ it looks like you get about 6 pop ups for a mere $125.

Inside Out Martini

martiniamt.jpgI could really use an Inside Out Martini right now ~ i’m sure you’re all quite familiar with Alissia Melka-Teichroew’s Inside Out Glasses ~ the champagne flutes have made the rounds on the design blogs quite a bit… but until she emailed me, i hadn’t noticed this great martini glass! [Huge congrats to the AMT Inc team on finding a manufacturer for the collection!!! I can’t wait to see these in all the design/home stores.] Other reasons she may seem familiar to you? The now classic “diamond rings” made out of acrylic (and also reinvented into some of the cutest stirrers) - images below if you need some catching up.

Oh, and the main reason she emailed? To share some really cool shopping bags for a store in The Netherlands (called Kwantum) that she designed with Jan Habraken from WATdesign, which are larger reusable grocery bags that sell for 1.50… similar to those Multistorey Re-Bag bags i posted, in that they are bags, with graphics of bags printed on them ~ and they even designed a few others with double handles! Check out the pics she sent over below.
