Chopstick Trainer

chopstick.jpg So you don’t know how to use chopsticks, and you want to, or you’re just hungry and need them to be able to grab food and get it to your mouth ASAP.

These were a hilarious or perhaps ingenious new take on easy chopsticks… that convert chopsticks (or sticks) by simply cutting holes in hardware store rubber tubing, and inserting the chopsticks.

Image after the jump of it in use.

SUGARCUBE timing-screensaving

sugarcubes2.jpg You NEED this screensaver, if only to turn your monitor into the sweetest clock around. Check out Koichiro Tsujikawa’s Sugar Cube Clock, it renders simplistic clean sugar cubes in the form of a 24hr clock, and as the minutes go by (and by your choice) ants or mini nissans come out and push/move the cubes around- you can change camera angles too.

Also check out the Groovisions screensaver as well… has a very katamari damacy feel to it… fresh blues and greens, and more fun driving action.

[link inspired by Josh Spear’s kind words of encouragement… which led me back to his site where i saw his new post on Amazetype which is so fun you must check it out… but that led me back to Shift which led me to these screensavers. I’m new at all this so i might not be linking my full threads of finds, as often they get more convuluted than this… but too much fun stuff brought me to my sugarcubes.]

Clean Green

Recently got into a conversation about green products when it came to home cleaning, and the implication was that they were hard to find and few on options… going through the latest Organic Style (fresh thinking, fresh living), and reinspired to research the options online, i was pleasantly surprised.

SUCK.co.uk

bottle-opener.jpg slide-lights.jpg PROFILE-02.jpg

I always said “if i had a blog i would definitely post about suck.co.uk”… and well, now i have a blog. So here’s my post to them.

For someone who grew up stateside, i always wanted a big key that did something on my keychain, and this definitely fulfilled having utility as a bottle opener and making my keychain look cool.

I was shopping some funky little london boutique when i found the Slide Light, at the time i had actually thought “wow creative use of a basic hallogen lighting… by the interior designer”, only to later find it’s actually sold by the suck boys. Still love the simplicity and such a fun way to view slides and change your lighting regularly.

And i have a soft spot for sweet mirrors that transcend their basic usage and help frame the reflection into a real looking-glass into another world (alice in wonderland-esque)… so that gets thrown in for kicks as well.

Washable Sandart

mn_sanddrawing_ch_03.jpgA quickie from the SF Gate a few days ago, wish i could have been there to see it, poke at it, photograph it. Doesn’t it just scream touch me?

Artist Jim Denevan, right, rakes a textured design into the sand, above, at Ocean Beach just below the Cliff House in conjuction with an art project and exhibit at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. The Sunday afternoon project was made to vanish with the tide. Denevan, of Santa Cruz, has completed some 300 beach drawings between San Francisco and Santa Cruz. The group exhibition at Yerba Buena, called “Big Deal,” features large-scale sculptures and photos of other huge projects, and is meant to push viewers to see the relationships between themselves and the art object and surrounding space.

Web Coloring

wheel.jpg I, unlike some very talented colorists, do not know the hex numbers of everything by heart, or by site, or their pantone codes either. I just like what i like, and sometimes have a hard time finding them again… so here are two resources I love; one old, one new: Both helpful.

First, from long ago, comes the 4096 color-wheel, clean html interface, click-choose-save (even save the page for frequent lookups). I can’t remember even attempting to lookup hex numbers before this.

The other, helpful for finding a site with a color pallete you fall for… simply enter a URL into “I Like Your Colors!” and see what they are. [these are simply pulled out of the CSS, so unfortunately, its not exactly like taking the dropper to any color shown]

Innovation as a Commodity

creativity.jpg After a year working on my design masters in Milan with design folk, mostly european and asian, you get somewhat coined “an american” extremely fast. Easy enough to write off as another stereotype, but from all stereotypes there lies something deeper. After a long talk with the head of my design program after thesis and graduation were said and done, the truth finally came out.

INNOVATION (aka WOW FACTOR) : apparently its what the US is known for (as well as other things we will not mention)… by the europeans and asians with their strong sense of history and constant reminders of the past strongly influencing their futures. So while at first it is easy to take offense, looking closely at what americans have revolutionized is the outside-of-the-box, adaptive, bounce-back in any situation survival skills which have helped our country flourish in a way… i suppose. Or thats what “they” say anyhow. So in a time of automation, extremely efficent computing and manufacturing (and outsourcing?) with this fear of all great things moving to asia to revolutionize the world as we know it… now what?

The trend in articles popping up in creative and business magazines is in realizing what our strong points are in. After working with an talented international design crowd for a year, simply growing up in american culture has apparently impacted my approach with an out-going rule-breaking naievete… slowly balanced with absorbing an understanding of european and asian constantly looking to the past. Now if only we could all harness the strengths of both, theoretically, anything is possible.

This little rant inspired by this creativity test (like you can really test that) i was led too, and the site it came from…

blogPINS

wearing.jpg Its a pin! Its a CD! You can pop off the front and literally stick it in your computer… and wear it around too… now why they called it a BLOGpin is beyond me, but it could definitely be a cool way to get your music out there at a concert, or pass out basically anything you want… cute. New gimmick of the old business card cd-rs.

Delicious Design

Ok so you already know: i’m a design book junkie.

I never really paid much attention earlier when my friend gushed about Delicious Monster’s Library program, but it is rather fun. One rainy LA day, my isight+my laptop+I decided to try it out, and scanned away with ease feeling like a supermarket check out woman (or what i always imagined it would feel like) scanning, hearing the beep, watching the satisfying black and white image om my comp as i tried to line up barcode and isight… its fun, its easy, and now when away from my books, or shopping for more, i always know what i have.

Year of the Cock

2005 Year of the Rooster, throw that in Hollywood, around the time of the Oscars, and naturally i suppose you end up with the Year of the Cock. Found this one at a Sassy Chicks Sample Sale up at Highlands, aussie woman and two friends designing them in LA. They also have a line of cheeky fortune cookie based shirts, and babies wear… see FortuneTees. Very LA, and as a designer i must admit it’s a gorgeous graphic. I could resist. She also mentioned they were given out in all the Oscars Presenters goodie bags (not sure if thats a good thing, but some people go for that). And as a sucker for packaging, they use chinese take-out boxes and even the extremely flimsy plastic bags you’d get take-out food in. Bonus points for thoroughness? Amusing find none-the-less.

(book) Shelve it!

Book junkie. Or perhaps, really a paper junkie… Next to my digital toys they are the first thing i’d grab in a fire… box and run i suppose. After many apartments these books ended up in many a box, and suddenly had no space, but needed a quick temporary place to put them (preferably decent looking as well).

Believe it or not (or if you’re a college student you probably have one too)… as much as i try to veer away from the ikea-fication of the world, (when i’ve been in Singapore, Milan, Los Angeles, New Haven… far too easy to end up with the same furniture in every apt. tempting even when so cost effective)… IKEA! 49$ most aesthetically pleasing solution i could find for fast and efficient.

Oh, and those are my prized posessions. Years of design, cartoons, art, children’s books that can’t help but make me smile… and i suppose its almost time for yet another shelf already.

Sleeve Scarf

indigopeople_sm.jpg A random and brilliant idea over at Hint Fashion Magazine’s shop, a hybrid of wearable objects to keep you warm, it can transform between being literal sleeves to keep your arms warm (not a far reach from those tiny sweaters that are really just connected sleeves) and a scarf wrap around to give your neck a very bizarre looking hug to onlookers… a twist on the old… or a new take on recycling?

ESUVEE!

ESUVEE! i’ll admit i drive one, not proud neccessarily, but it works. Don’t get me wrong i understand where all the anti-SUV folk are coming from, and the trendy Prius people too… but sometimes you just look past it all for a moment and check out some hilariously brilliant design… which should reach out and touch you no matter what side of the SUV argument you are from.

Great graphics. nice site. really fun ad. go play.
