Veuve Clicquot at Gansevoort

gvcliquot.jpg
DISCLAIMER: i know, one shouldn’t drink and shoot… so please excuse the blurriness, but we went for drinks at the penthouse bar of Hotel Gansevoort, and i took shots of the Karim Rashid Veuve Clicquot Loveseat in the lobby last minute on the way out! That being said… i posted about this chair previously, and it was really fun to see and try it out in real life. It’s actually pretty fun to sit in, but completely impractical if you want to have a romantic loveseat - good for keeping a safe amount of distance though… and not place to really put your glasses, so its ideal for bottle chugging perhaps. Its as slippery as it looks, and you can surely slide about in it far too easily, and beware of sharper objects like jeans rivets, which would surely scratch it up pretty badly. Also funny is how they displayed it with a life-size image behind it… so taken right, you could have a picture of that guy looking down at YOU! Many more images of the chair and the view from the roof below.

Pick Chair in the Wild

pickchairmain.jpg
Studio Dror has an incredible exhibition at Yigal Azroul’s boutique in the meat packing district… as if the fashion isn’t incredibly displayed already, infuse a center row of installations, sinks, chairs, cabinets, and so much more… but most exciting? Seeing the Pick Chairs (manufactured by BBB) in person! (and surrounded by mannequins and security guard/bouncer guys) See more about the pick chair below, the detail on the hinges and the etchings were even more drool worthy up close. (and there’s a video of it in action on the Studio Dror site)

Iceland Cometh

icelandicmain.jpg
Iceland Cometh - Icelandic Design Collective, Eve NYC Studio “Iceland Air presents a collective of Icelandic designers currently making their mark on the international landscape.” Iceland is huge this year. Especially at ICFF with Reyka Vodka and Iceland Air really getting out there, and strongly supporting all the design goodness in the Meat Packing District. Gorgeous space ~ more images below! Love the way the Butterfly pieces make use of both reflections and shadows, and the stances and silhouettes of the fashion pieces are just intimidatingly stunning. And the shadows created by the multilayered precisely cut wood flowers in the chair are incredible.

The Wrong Store

wrongmain.jpg
When is a store not a store? When the opening is a group of scenesters milling about in the street outside a 6x10 “come in we’re CLOSED” store, as black dunhills and CC Tobias Wong limited edition (of 2500) matchbooks and mini cups of RUSSIAN water* (dispensed out of pumps in pockets) are for the taking from the kids wandering around with trays… The Wrong Store, as only artist-designer Tobias Wong and Gregory Krum, retail director of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, could imagine it. As NYMag says, “the Wrong Store blurs design/fashion/art works by Richard Prince, Marcel Wanders, Herzog & de Meuron, Rodarte, Douglas Coupland, Maison Martin Margiela, Hella Jongerius, and others.” Pics below of the odd experience you need to see to understand.

*russian water = Stoli vodka/gin… served permitless on the street.

Esque Studio

esque1.jpg
Esque Studio - Mind-blowingly beautiful booth and blown glass, especially made me think of mr. chompers, and how he’s growing out of his current home, and when time for a new terrarium Shade Elaine definitely needs one of these. This Portland based, eco friendly company (see time magazine blurb from their Style and Design 100 List) - creates some stunning works that embody such a fluid look… from terrariums, to hanging pieces, and even black glass skulls! More images below.

“esque is the leading american company in producing hand made, functional modern glass ware + accessories. the name esque refers to the suffix, + is a nod to the acknowledgement of outside influence + inspiration. esque evolved through the partnering of justin parker + andi kovel in 1996.”

ICFF Mess

icffmess.jpg
Trade shows are no joke, and ICFF is tiring! Between all the great exhibitions going on around the city, as well as the actual show at Javitz, i haven’t had the time to properly sort all the pics and brochures and press kits and post yet, so for those eager just to see what it’s like and whats there, here are about 300 pics of some of the things that grabbed me so far. Mixko at Designboom Mart

dbmixkomain.jpg
Mixko at the Designboom Mart. As much as i love furniture and all the normal ICFF highlights, this was the part that leaves me giddy, as i sit here in the hotel room with almost no energy left. Skull Ring (40$) in person- even more amazing than the pics… the butterfly rings (10$) too! (As you can see i indulged and bought 6 rings - might need to go back for more!) It was fun to finally meet Nahoko in person, she’s so sweet, and she even showed me a limited edition GOLD Skull Ring (pics below, she was kind enough to model it)… and the Cloud/Rainy Necklace has a name now! English Summer Necklace (30$). Anyhow, sorry my sentence forming abilities are a bit stunted at the moment, just wanted to share some highlights as they happen… more pics below. You can also buy on the Mixko site.

Design Blogfest

dblogfestmain.jpg
WOW. My head is spinning, i haven’t stopped since 4am PST… basically SFO-JFK flight, getting into the city, checking in, running by a very cool sample sale, walking to grab some delicious dinner at Rickshaw quickly, rushing over to the Design Blogfest… and a few adventures later and after meeting many incredible people… here i am back in the hotel trying to pop a quick post out for those who didn’t make it out.

Big props to Harry Wakefield from MocoLoco and the generous folks at The Apt… and Lockhart Steele over at Curbed/Gawker… they pulled off an insane party… short story? 2500 people RSVP’d (their space holds about 200), i showed up at 6:15, and we barely fit… but 6:30 they were barely letting anyone in (see pictures of hardcore bouncers below)… pseudo-VIP party migrates down a few doors to Gawker HQ (very fun space! sorry i was too busy bouncing around chatting with folks to take pics there), so check out some pictures of the main party at The Apt here. Going to try and catch a little sleep before roaming ICFF tomorrow and huge thanks to everyone who made it out.

update: just saw these pics over at Sellsius Real Estate - poor guys didn’t even get all the way in! but pics of the insane lines…

Apparently Funfurde was there too!

Childhood Memories

childhoodmemories.jpg
Since i was unable to attend Brooklyn Designs, luckily Sanam Petri had a chance to go and check out all the fantastic designs shown there earlier this week. Of them, she wrote me about “The Weirdest Exhibit: The guys at SSD (Site-Specific Design) have started a project that focuses on childhood memories, and features these giant, surreal bug-lamps. They’re supposed to be “whimsical,” but they really just creep me out.”

These fascinating Bugs as well as their series of Tops, actually quite amused me, and did in fact bring out the childhood memories i’ve had with my sister spending hours playing with spinning tops and collecting and inspecting many an insect. Gorgeous how they’ve managed to streamline those themes into such a clean aesthetic while keeping it so playful. Looking forward to seeing more of their work at ICFF.

Some Ecards

someecards.jpg
I can’t imagine sending any other e-cards other than these… to people with a sense of humor. Couldn’t stop laughing and browsing when i saw these “Some Ecards”: when you care enough to hit send that Evan over at Cool Hunting found. And as you can see, i couldn’t decide which few were most amusing, bitter, hilarious… so here are 12 that seemed worth sharing, but there are MANY more for every situation you may (and hopefully will not) need a card for. “It was created by Brook Lundy and Duncan Mitchell, and designed by Jerry Tamburro. New cards, categories, and features will be frequently added until everyone involved with the site dies.”

The Next Everything

nexteverything.jpg
HEIRLOOM IS THE NEXT DISPOSABLE. MOSS ON A ROCK IS THE NEXT BOX OF GRASS. PLUG-INS ARE THE NEXT SCENTED CANDLES. GRAY IS THE NEXT CHOCOLATE BROWN. SMEG IS THE NEXT SUB-ZERO. LAVENDER IS THE NEXT HOT PINK. VELCRO IS THE NEXT MAGNET. FURNITURE IS THE NEXT KNITTING. Do you believe it? I’m not sure, but they are kind of funny to me right now. Fun images too in this New York Magazine slide show on the Next Everything.

VOTE for the Window

pickthewinner07.jpg
It’s still Tuesday in most places! Hey everyone, sorry its been a bit slow, i’m not running the show on this one, and we’ve been a bit pressed for time ~ so BIG THANKS to Harry over at MocoLoco for making everything possible with the Design Blogfest coming up friday. SO, sadly only one design (or hopefully a series if Alice Wang’s Pet Plus products or Chris Dimino’s Typewriter series win!) get displayed in the window all through ICFF… but its up to YOU to vote. So please vote below! (I’m sure you can guess of those, which i’d love to see up there)… and for anyone who can’t make it, you can be sure i’ll take lots of pics for all of you.

The voting will remain open until 11:47pm EST tomorrow.

NOTCOT Buttons

notcotbuttonw.jpg
Where in the world are the NOTCOT buttons? Well, thats what i want to know, and a few people have sent pics back. (and for those who have recently put orders in, they are all in the mail! I’m doing batches about once a week) Miguel over in Spain has a post up on Evasee about his buttons that’s had me smiling all day. And Sara (Milano, Italia) sent in this cute shot of them… and Larry (Framingham, MA) has them on his bag strap already! More in the Gallery

And if you want buttons… see here. I will also probably have some with me in NY, but haven’t figured out how to distribute… any ideas?

Bamboo round 2

bamboonewwa.jpg
I am sad to admit i was a bit too excited and premature on posting the minimal info that Engadget led me to on the Wacom Bamboo. (I should have known better when i saw the awesome box graphics!) Apparently Wacom has pulled out all the stops on an insane international web campaign for this one…. well, international minus the americas so far. Here are some screenshots of the various sites… europe/africa and china’s being most impressive. The flashy line drawn graphics (and overly peppy music) on black are a nice touch. They even have desktop wallpapers… with screensavers and buddy icons coming soon. Screenshots below. Fascinating to see how they alter the branding for each market.
